Wear to extremities chiefly to spine edges and corners; spine splitting at edges; some soiling rubbing and browning to covers chiefly to edges and corners; previous owner's ink inscription on front attached endpaper; tape reinforcement to inner hinges at top and lower edges; slight internal browning and/or foxing chiefly to preliminaries and edges; generally unaffecting plates. ca. 125 pages including plates; unpaginated. Text in French. Spine title: Robert-Macaire. Second part of the pictorial depiction of the title gentleman of many talents including lawyer quacksalver mesmerist etc; numbers 51 to 101 in the series this copy lacks plate 68 and substitutes a duplicate copy of the text and illustration for plate 96 in its place. Bound in half brown morocco over green heavy stock boards gilt-stamped and decorated spine and covers plain endpapers all edges trimmed. Scarce in any condition. Plate 57 from the Robert Macaire 'Caricaturana' series. <br /> 'Confound it Mr. Dentist you have pulled out two good teeth and have left the two bad ones' Robert Macaire aside 'The devil' aloud 'No doubt and for good reasons there is always time to extract the bad ones ; as to the others they would have decayed and caused you pain. A false set will never make you suffer and it is of a better kind ; people wear nothing but that now'.From a series of lithographs that show the character Robert Macaire in a variety of guises. Macaire originally a character in a play is a swindler who takes on a number of professions such as journalist librarian and so on always ruthlessly pursuing personal gain. Macaire's character symbolised the mood in France at the time of the July Monarchy of the 1830s and 1840s when wealthy financiers and company owners dominated politics and looked after their own interests at the expense of others. In this print Macaire is in the guise of a dentist. CONDITION : There is some discolouration at the bottom of the sheet and a little in the title area. Some toning to the edges of the sheet. unknown

It is also without the number 1. to the top right that appears on the later imprints. Signed h.D. in the plate. A very good clean impression with a little foxing only. The fold to the centre as called for on this edition. Verso is blank but for slight foxing. A very nice copy of this rare Daumier engraving. 16.5cm x 22.5cm. Cat.Rais.: Delteil 551 .
