En 1862, Pierre-Jules Hetzel demande à Gustave Doré de créer des illustrations pour une nouvelle édition des Contes de Charles Perrault, en format in-folio avec des gravures pleine pages qui mettraient en exergue les éléments majeurs de chaques contes. Entre gothique et romantisme, Gustave Doré reprend ses registres de prédilection en mêlant des scènes champêtres, nocturnes, romantique voir érotique comme celles de Peau-D'âne dénudée. Les gravures sont réalisées par différents graveurs : Pisan, Pannemaker, Facnion, Louis-Henri Brevière, Louis Dumont, Emile Deschamps, Delduc, Charles Maurand, François Perdon, Perrichon, Boetzel et Hebert. Certains sont présents plus que d'autres, comme Pannemaker, ou encore Pisan qui propose des nuances de noir magnifique dans ses gravures. Ces 40 gravures sont dans leur jus et possèdent des défauts, tels que des marges abîmées, bruni, des rousseurs et épidermures. Les images possèdent très peu voir aucune perte. "Guinevere" is one of Tennyson's 12 narrative poems on Arthurian legend known collectively as "Idylls of the King" a cycle of twelve narrative poems which retells the legend of King Arthur his knights his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him and the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom. "One of the finest lyrists of the English tongue" Kunitz & Haycraft 612 Tennyson reawakened the general reading public's interest in Arthurian legend with his Idylls of the King. The first four of the cycle's eventual 12 poems were first published in 1859. Tennyson's retelling of the old tales placed them "on a new plateau of respect and significance for writers and artists" Lacy 446. "No other foreign illustrator and few native ones of the period so completely captured the English fancy as Doré…Tennyson and his publisher Moxon greatly favored Doré as an illustrator" Muir Victorian Illustrated Books 227 244.
