56745London etc.: Cassell 1903 - 1904. 4to. Original brown wrappers designed and lettered in black. In 36 parts measuring about 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Issued fortnightly between May 1903 and September 1904. 136 full-page Engravings by Dore. Minor edge wear and a rusty mark from a paper clip on the first part overall a very good to near-fine set in unusually nice condition considering the fragile format. There is light spine wear to a few parts one has a crease in the rear cover Part 7 has a small chip from the upper corner a couple have dried-out glue and are loose from the covers; in general they are very fresh and clean. Original receipts for some parts 6d from a Drapery shop are laid in also advertising leaflets and colour ad cards for soap are tipped-in to numerous parts. Title pages are printed in red & black; contents pages and list of plates are printed in the final part as well as a sample Dore plate for the forthcoming edition of Milton's Paradise Lost. Publisher's original brown cloth with black titles to the upper board and spine in dustwrapper. With 332 illustrations including 116 plates in colour 75 of which including never before produced studio views and newly discovered early works are new to this edition. A fine copy the binding square and firm the contents clean throughout and without previous owner's marks. Complete with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper that remains without fading loss or tears. Inscribed by New York School abstract expressionist painter in black ink on the front endpaper "For Newton Schenck / with many thanks / Robert Motherwell / 1983". The recipient Charles Newton Schenck III was a prominent lawyer civic leader and founder of New Haven's Long Wharf Theatre who was a champion of the arts and instrumental in creating the New Haven arts district. Both Schenck and Motherwell were recipients of the Connecticut Arts Awards in 1980 and 1978 respectively. The 1977 first edition of this title sold out soon after publication. In addition to the extra illustrations this revised edition adds Dore Ashton's essay and an interview with the artist by Barbaralee Diamonstein.
