12307Bradbury Evans and Co. Printers Whitefriars. Circa 1867. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. Aged and ruckled. Doré's huge painting 'The Triumph of Christianity over Paganism' was first exhibited in the Egyptian Hall in Piccadilly in 1867. Taylor begins his analysis of the work by contending that Doré 'has embodied pictorially the same idea of the overthrow of Heathenism by Christianity which Milton described poetically in his "Ode to the Nativity."' He concludes by stating: 'Thus the whole picture is a painted Paean or triumphal hymn of Christianity over the impure faiths which it destroyed not as the creed of Mahomet drove out Arab Sabaeanism by the torch of the invader and the sword of the flesh but by the light of the Word and the weapon of the Spirit.' Excessively scarce: no copy in the British Library or on COPAC. Bradbury, Evans, and Co., Printers, Whitefriars. [Circa 1867.] unknown

"Guinevere" is one of Tennyson's 12 narrative poems on Arthurian legend known collectively as "Idylls of the King" a cycle of twelve narrative poems which retells the legend of King Arthur his knights his love for Guinevere and her tragic betrayal of him and the rise and fall of Arthur's kingdom. "One of the finest lyrists of the English tongue" Kunitz & Haycraft 612 Tennyson reawakened the general reading public's interest in Arthurian legend with his Idylls of the King. The first four of the cycle's eventual 12 poems were first published in 1859. Tennyson's retelling of the old tales placed them "on a new plateau of respect and significance for writers and artists" Lacy 446. "No other foreign illustrator and few native ones of the period so completely captured the English fancy as Doré…Tennyson and his publisher Moxon greatly favored Doré as an illustrator" Muir Victorian Illustrated Books 227 244. Moxon was in fact "the only publisher ever to commission steel engravings from Doré.the steel engravings give much more of a speckled look to the scenes different from the grainy look of Doré's usual wood engravings. It produces a dreamy mystical serene feeling that is quite different for Doré" Malan 97. Leblanc p.231 London: Edward Moxon, 1867. hardcover
