L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé, avec un léger assombrissement des pages. Chaque page présente un portrait de personnalités de Paris et de Versailles pendant la guerre franco-prussienne et la Commune. Caricatures attrayantes. Certaines sont en bleu. "Lorsque Gustave Doré quitta Paris, pendant la Commune (avril-mai 1871), il fut reçu à Versailles, ainsi que sa mère, par de vieux amis, et il eut la bonté de leur laisser, en souvenir de son séjour, ces croquis pleins d'esprit et d'humour, mêlés à une observation profonde sous le masque plaisant qu'il prêtait aux différents types reproduits par son inépuisable imagination" (extrait de la note préliminaire de L.
