Original pink soft covers are bound in. These are in good shape but with a crease to one corner. Internally clean and tidy throughout with light darkening to the pages. Each has a portrait of personalities in Paris and Versailles during the Franco-Prussian war and the Commune. Attractive caricatures. Some in blue tint. "When Gustave Doré left Paris during the Commune April-May 1871 he was received at Versailles as well as his mother by old friends and was kind enough to leave them as a souvenir of his stay these witty sketches filled with humour mixed with profound observation under the pleasant mask that he lent to the different types reproduced by his inexhaustible imagination" from the preliminary note by L. Bruyère. The work includes a preface by Gabriel Hanotaux and is divided into three themes: The National Assembly in 1871 the Commune and the Judiciary. vi 98 leaves ii. containing 95 plates printed to one side only. 29.5cm x 20.5cm. . Première édition. Livre relié en planches recouvertes de tissu. Étiquette en cuir au dos. En bon état propre. L'ex-libris du propriétaire se trouve à l'intérieur de la planche. Les couvertures souples roses d'origine sont reliées. Elles sont en bon état mais présentent un pli à un coin. L'intérieur est propre et bien rangé avec un léger assombrissement des pages. Chaque page présente un portrait de personnalités de Paris et de Versailles pendant la guerre franco-prussienne et la Commune. Caricatures attrayantes. Certaines sont en bleu. "Lorsque Gustave Doré quitta Paris pendant la Commune avril-mai 1871 il fut reçu à Versailles ainsi que sa mère par de vieux amis et il eut la bonté de leur laisser en souvenir de son séjour ces croquis pleins d'esprit et d'humour mêlés à une observation profonde sous le masque plaisant qu'il prêtait aux différents types reproduits par son inépuisable imagination" extrait de la note préliminaire de L. To Mr. Emmet Lavery 1075 Casiano Road Los Angeles 24 California Interesting letter from Schary reporting that MGM has QUO VADIS under production and is unable to consider filming Lowery's script BOLIVAR. We find no record that the script was filmed. Provenance: from the estate of literary agent H.N. Swanie Swanson. Schary 1905-1980 born August 31 1905 Newark New Jersey; died July 7 1980 New York New York; American writer/producer of films; winner of the Best Screenplay Academy Award for "Boys' Town" 1938; producer at MGM 1941-1945; head of production at RKO 1945-48; head of production at MGM 1948-1956; independent producer thereafter. Swanson 1900-91 one of the nation's most famous literary agents; known in the industry as "Swanie"; wrote and produced a handful of films after David O. Selznick saw his work in College Humor; he opened an office on Sunset Boulevard in 1934 and at one time his clients included Raymond Chandler William Faulkner James M. Cain Ayn Rand Cornell Woolrich Budd Schulberg S.J.
