Top board with gilt text and tooled borders. Notes: A superbly illustrated edition of the story of the Wandering Jew from the mid 19th century. The illustrations are set to a poem about the Wandering Jew by Pierre-Jean de Ranger. The story of the Wandering Jew dates back to the crucifixion of Christ. The story relates that as Jesus was being led to the spot of his crucifiction a Jewish man shouted insults at him and in response Jesus said “'Verily I say unto you There be some standing here which shall not taste of death till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.†This meant that until the return of Christ this Jewish man would be forced to live and wander the earth.
