184832820701A classic characteristic daguerreotype portrait of Henry Clay the "Great Compromiser" a dominant force in American politics for decades. He represented Kentucky in Congress from 1806 until his death in 1852 with a few breaks for cabinet duty or a presidential campaign–he ran four times without success. A political moderate he brokered the Compromise of 1850 that kept the United States intact.A nearly identical portrait of Clay was copyrighted by Philadelphia photographer Montgomery P. Simons. Simons wrote to the Photographic Art Journal in 1853 to discuss this sitting:"My likeness of Mr. Clay which has elicited so many encomiums from the press and which you have been pleased to criticise so favorably as a valuable likeness is still more valuable for having associated with it a pleasing and characteristic anecdote of that great statesman. This anecdote made such a strong impression upon my memory as being a most elegant impromptu that I am now able to give it to you verbatim although it has been several years since it happened. At the time I took the picture of Mr. Clay he was on a visit to Philadelphia and the guest of one of his warmest friends Mr. Potter who accompanied him to my Gallery."As Mr. Potter and myself were about arranging Mr. Clay's drapery I asked him if he had any choice of position; his answer was 'None whatever sir; I am Clay in the hands of a Potter let him mould me as he will.'""Henry Clay of Kentucky had one of the most superlative political careers in American history. A lawyer by training Clay served in almost every level of government possible in the 19th century: the Kentucky state house of representatives the United States Senate the United States House of Representatives and the executive branch as Secretary of State. On top of that he helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent ending the War of 1812 and ran for President three times over three decades on three different party tickets Democratic Republican Party 1824; National Republican Party 1832; and the Whig Party 1844."Despite being a political journeyman Clay's true home he confessed was in the House. He served as Speaker—and resigned from the Speakership—on three separate occasions but the exact timeline of his House career isn't as straightforward as we might expect from one of America's foremost statesmen. The Kentuckian had served in the Senate twice before capturing a seat in the House in 1810 promptly winning election as Speaker on the first day of his first term" House of Representatives website.Provenance: early ink inscription on verso: ""given by Henry Clay to Isaac Fuller." 1926CNJL743Munich: Bremer Presse 1926-1928 1926. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Simons Anna. One of 365 copies folio size 5 volumes complete in German. An extraordinary publication by the Bremer Press of the "Martin Luther Bible". Translated by Luther directly from the Greek during his enforced sequestration in Wartburg Castle 1521-22 it was first published in 1545 and he continued to edit and refine his translation up to his death the following year. Translating directly from the Greek was a marked departure for the academics of the day who relied on the Latin Vulgate translation and used Latin for their studies with Greek seldom used or even taught.

Luther chose to translate from the Greek into the vernacular German language of the day making the scriptures accessible to everyday people and at the same time providing a vehicle for a more unified German language. The Bremer Press known for its interrelation of scholarship type design and book design has provided a version of the Luther Bible edited by Professor Carl von Kraus 1868-1952 Professor of German Philology at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. n. b. above info from Wiki and Ransom.

___DESCRIPTION: Set of five volumes complete; Volume I: Die Bucher Mose; Volume II: Das Ander Teil des Alten Testaments; Volume III: Das Dritte Teil des Alten Testaments; Volume IV: Die Propheten; and Volume V: Das Neue Testament. 200126417Antwerp: Detlef BVBA 2001. Faint impression mark to the front cover and a hint of smudging to the printed white boards else fine. First Edition. Oblong quarto. 2001 Spring / Summer lookbook of arguably the most important men's collection of the 2000s. In a sparse and minimalist selection of twelve color images Simons anticipates by less than a year the post-9/11 era of anxiety and surveillance. Using stills captured from a video by frequent Simons collaborator and fellow Academy alumnus Willy Vanderperre; grainy uneasy images of young men on a concrete basketball court wearing balaclavas and hoods. Simons had long been fascinated by presenting his clothing via video; his first collection F/W 95 was a video recording of street models instead of live runway. The anxious threatening mood of this lookbook and artists' book is one of the final and best instances of pre-millennial anxiety in art and fashion. Antwerp: Detlef BVBA unknown books

Some are captioned. Images include Simons speaking at banquets with local dignitaries many sari-clad dancing girls pictures of Simons in the streets etc.

Curiously we could find relatively little about Simons although his son Thomas W.
