This volume features a letter in memory of the war poet Keith Douglas 1920-1944 and poetry and prose from well-known writers such as R. S. Thomas Stevie Smith Henry Miller and Lawrence Durrell. Dark Navy Blue Boards with bright crimson red titling to the front board and to the foot of the spine tho the actual title to the spine is blocked in red with the Navy title showing through. The boards are a good deep colour the corners and head and tail of the spine all show a very small amount of very light bumping but overall are very crisp and clean The pictorial dustjacket is price-clipped. The tips of the corners and the head/tail of the dustjacket are very sl. chipped and there are a couple of tiny closed tears but the jacket is now enclosed in a clear protective acetate cover and looks VG. Dated 1954 on the reverse of the Title page - although does not state 'First Published.' 254 pp. Full Colour Frontispiece by D.C.Eyles who also designed the dustjacket. No Inscriptions or marks - internally Nr. fine. "Who is the Guy Varenne" The plot in the tradition of Orczy's 'Scarlet Pimpernel centres around a young Englishman and the intrigues amongst the personages within the Royal Court of France with Cardinal Richelieu and Duke of Buckingham inevitably present. "The Bartlett brothers Stephen and Alfred S. both pearlers of Broome W.Australia. enlisted together in the 10th Light Horse Regiment in May 1915 and embarked from Freemantle on HMAT Anchises in September. They saw plenty of action. Alfred was recommended for a bravery award at Rafa in January 1917 but sadly died of wounds that April and is buried in Gaza. Steve soldiered on in the great ride to Damascus and then to patrolling the Delta. After the war he settled in England and became an author writing under the name of Gurney Slade". This reproduction has a Light blue cloth spine with gilt titling/decoration and pinkish/rust coloured cloth boards. Both volumes have matching covers and are extremely clean and tight but the spines are both lightly sunned/faded and the gilt titling/decoration is quite rubbed. Internally Fine. No Slipcase. Illustrated with a map of Canada and full page and vignette engravings by W. H. Bartlett to both volumes. Black and white illustrated title page.
