IV140; IV106 pp. First edition; with armorial bookplate. - In the years 1836-1838 and 1851-1852 William Bartlett 1809-1854 a highly skilful landscape artist made four voyages to the United States and Canada. His romantic views are among the best produced in the 19th century they show nice views of the north eastern states in the 1830's including New York Boston Washington D.C. Baltimore Philadelphia etc. - Some minor foxing but on the whole a handsome copy of this classic of American landscape with views depicting the principal American cities and picturesque views. Quarto publisher's original Irish green cloth the spines gilt decorated with gilt lettering and elaborate pictorial Irish motifs the covers with all over designs stamped in blind and with a central gilt pictorial ornament surrounded by vines and flowers gilt all edges gilt one of the most preferred of the bindings used by the publisher's to present this fine work. vi 1794 ads.; iv 186 pp. A really pleasing copy of this fine work both volumes beautifully preserved and in essentially fine condition the light wear or evidence of age comes primarily from shelving the plates and text-blocks are in fresh and clean condition with only very occasional evidence of the usual spotting to which the paper is prone. As usual the engraved titles with a bit more of the spotting. Generally a very clean and handsome set in unusually nice condition. AN ESPECIALLY BEAUTIFUL WORK FILLED WITH PICTURESQUE STEEL ENGRAVED SCENES OF IRELAND. William Bartlett traveled extensively throughout Europe and the East with his good friend Dr. Beattie and brought home over a thousand drawings. Eventually they were engraved and published into volumes with descriptive text. Here we find one of one of Bartlett's best works partly attributable to the magnificent scenery of the country described. Each engraving combines attention to detail subtle use of lighting and shade and romantic portrayal of the landscape. Scenes are rendered from virtually every corner of the country and include both natural and architectural compositions.<br> The text focuses heavily on the history of each locale but also includes local customs sights and first hand travel impressions. A somewhat elusive title in the Bartlett oeuvre these illustrations of Ireland are typical of his best and most famous work. George Virtue hardcover

Complete with two folding frontispieces a large fold-out map showing the border of the US and Mexico archivally mended and 14 tinted lithographed plates including one of Tucson Sonora not called for in the index. There is minor foxing to the plates. About 100 pages of text in Vol. 2 are discolored from what appears to be caused by the use of the volume as a tree leaf press and the pages facing the endpapers are moderately toned/browned. Bartlett was a skilled topographical draughtsman who travelled extensively providing the plates for a number of travelogues. CANADIAN SCENERY is considered his finest work. Between 1836 and 1852 he visited the U.S. and Canada four times and sketched much of what he saw. The views include Kingston Cobourg Ottawa River Quebec Toronto Queenstown scenes of Indians and much more. Willis provides the text descriptive of the plates and relating a history and the current conditions in the eastern provinces and Upper and Lower Canada in 1839-40. SABIN 3786 ref. Small closed tears to spines Vol. VI No. 1 cover detached Vol. VIII No. 4 covers taped. Some chipping and small closed tears to edges some staining to covers. The notorious San Francisco magazine published in the 1890s for the delectation of the sporting and theatrical element. The chief substance of the periodical was the libelous gossip spread throughout its pages recording in a scandalous and occasionally vitriolic manner the doings of men-about-town brothel keepers married men sporting figures prostitutes and saloon keepers. It has been said that this page was responsible for half of the era's divorces and public scandals.<p>The magazine also contained a mine of information on San Francisco theater politics music and vaudeville. Many articles cover police scandals sporting events local politics and society. Quite scarce with high demand owing to the salacious unvarnished record of San Francisco's Gay 'Nineties. OCLC records sporadic holdings of issues at five institutions. Now housed in a clear archival sleeve with an acid-free backing. World Publishing Co unknown
