185429580
John Russell Bartlett's Personal Narrative stands as one of the definitive published records of the American Southwest's geographical and cultural landscapes during the mid-19th century. Commissioned in 1850 under President Zachary Taylor Bartlett served as the U.S. Commissioner to the Boundary Commission tasked with surveying the new border following the Mexican-American War. His richly documented two-volume account published in 1854 by D. Appleton in New York includes extensive observations of the regions traversed and the peoples encountered particularly the Seri of northern Mexico whose vocabulary is partially preserved here. Bartlett's narrative is accompanied by an oversized folding map and numerous full-page plates depicting monuments cityscapes and the surrounding topography. Referenced by Howes Wagner-Camp Streeter Sabin Cowan and Abbey this first edition remains an essential cornerstone for scholars and collectors of Western Americana. Fine condition; rebacked in later leather over solid boards with secure binding and clean interiors. #29580. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
D. Appleton hardcover

John Russell Bartlett 1805-1886 a historian and linguist was appointed to oversee the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission to survey and establish the current boundary between the United States and Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and expanded with the Gadsden Purchase. The survey also determined the route of a southern railroad. Bartlett was also an artist and made illustrations of the southwest landscape. From Wagner-Camp ". Bartlett was a talented artist observer and reporter who contributed greatly to the knowledge of the geography and topography of the Southwest in his Personal Narrative. During three years with the Mexican Boundary Commission he traveled widely from central Texas to the Pacific Ocean and from Mazatlan to San Francisco. A contentious man and lacking perhaps certain administrative skills Bartlett succeeded in antagonizing most of his fellow-official on the Commission. Graff points out that "a number of incidents described by Bartlett have been differently interpreted by his associates. D. Appleton & Company unknown

William Henry Bartlett 1809-1854 was Born in Kentish Town London. The young Bartlett was apprenticed to John Britton 1771-1857. He became one of the foremost illustrators of topography of his generation travelling not just throughout Britain but to the Americas in 1839-42. In the mid/late 1840s he travelled extensively in the Balkans and Middle East. Bartlett travelled to all the places he drew unlike many of his contemporaries who worked up their pictures from sketches by others. Most of Bartlett's prints are steel engravings which was the dominant illustative process between around 1825 and 1845. He died of fever on board ship returning from his last trip to Israel in 1854. 023240No Binding. Near Fine. Publisher: John Bartlett. Large light brown cloth boards measuring 8" x 5" Gilt and blindstamped. The edges are uniformly sunned with light wear to the ends remarkably nice condition for these covers which are commonly found disbound and/or in rough shape. Map and Illustration sheet measures 17" x 15". Map has a professionally mended tear along the central crease. Another short tear at the tip-in junction likely from a careless opening of the map. Otherwise map is near fine with none of the usual foxing and very little edge wear. Etchings by Wallis from Champney drawings are also in near fine condition. A favorite of mine the Franconia Lake scene is quite lovely in its simplistic beauty with a small dingy and pair of sightseers. The Bond map with the Champney views is to be considered a cornerstone to any collection of such material. As according to Bent The five lithographed views after Champney are printed on the reverse of the map. Map sheet is printed on thicker paper than is noted on the more common printing included in B. Willey's History 1856. In the past 30 years or so as a book dealer here in the White Mountains I have seen perhaps 8 examples of the larger two formats this variation most of the time. References; Apt Maps of the White Mountains of New Hampshire; Bent's Bibliography of the White Mountains; Cobb Maps of New Hampshire to 1900; Historical New Hampshire Vol. 51 No's 3&4 1996 Beauty Caught and Kept: Benjamin Champney in the White Mountains. Many photos available on request. Incidently pun intended the title 'Incidents in White Mountain History'by Willey Rev. Ben. also a cornerstone classic used the 5 Champney lithoss and the Bond map for illustrative purposes though the Map is printed on much lighter paper as previously mentioned. It is likely that Willey Champney and Bond were all acquaintances if not friends even though the good Reverend Willey was the senior by about a quarter century.

unknown

An intimate and rich observation of life in Constantinople in 1836 by Miss Julia Pardoe 1806-1862 in collaboration with popular topographical artist W. H. Bartlett depicting the Ottoman empire during an era of growing European influence and illustrated throughout with delightful engravings after Bartlett. Miss Pardoe traveled to Constantinople with her father in 1836-7 inspiring first the work "City of the Sultan" in 1836 and then the collaborative "Beauties of the Bosphorus" in 1838. In the tradition of travel writer Lady Mary Wortley Montegu Pardoe focuses her attention on the Turkish culture. According to Pardoe "The work Beauties of Bosphorus is purely a descriptive one and I have followed this talented artist Bartlett wheresoever he has led me and found him no inefficient guide. Together we have visited mosques wandered in burial places climbed mountains and glided over the sun-lighted Bosphorus." Indeed illustrated with graceful words and exquisite drawings are: panoramic views camels kiosques Turkish baths slave markets harems aqueducts markets homes the Valley of Sweet Waters and more. Pardoe delighted in the "varying character of the native population constituted as it is by such anomalous materials -- the truthful Turk the wily Greek the stately Armenian and the timid Jew." Also "I was able to penetrate the very center of Turkish society and to domesticate myself with both princes and peasants." The work is dedicated to Mustafa Rechid Pasha a government official who embraced modern reform and was an architect of the Tanzimat constitutional reform. The map entitled "Environs of Constantinople with the Thracian Bosphorus" was drawn and engraved by W. Hughes and depicts Istanbul from the Black Sea in the north to the Sea of Marmara in the south with the Bosphorus separating the "Part of Turkey in Europe" and the "Part of Turkey in Asia." Also included is an inset map entitled "Continuation of the Coast with the Princes Islands."
