The case illustrates the early efforts of medical societies to control physicians' treatment of their patients. The Society had tossed Bartlett for praising a physician who the Society contended was a quack. Bartlett said the Society itself "tended to promote quackery." Moreover it sought exclusive privileges for its members and prohibited "consultation with any who do not become members of that body." Witnesses are sworn and testimony presented. William Bartlett traveled extensively throughout Europe and the East with his good friend Dr. Beattie and brought home over a thousand drawings. Here we find one of one of Bartlett's best works partly attributable to the magnificent scenery of the country described. Each engraving combines attention to detail subtle use of lighting and shade and romantic portrayal of the landscape. Scenes are rendered from virtually every corner of the country and include both natural and architectural compositions.<br> The text focuses heavily on the history of each locale but also includes local customs sights and first hand travel impressions. A curious album of mid-nineteenth-century American trade advertisements printed on the versos of steel-engraved plates by W. H. Bartlett 1809-1854 the popular landscape artist. These must have been remaindered from his popular series of books illustrated with world views. An index at the front of the volume lists the companies included in the advertisements by the merchandise they produced: drugs book-bindings carpets china stained glass engravings ink lamps locks maps pianos spices and more. Most of the businesses are in New York or Boston with other northeast manufacturing centers such as Philadelphia and Troy occasionally represented. Some advertisements are also illustrated. Barlett’s business was located at 69 Murray Street New York where he distributed the Squire’s Patent Fruit Jar. “The GREAT SECRET in preserving fruit lies in thoroughly expelling the oxygen and safely sealing therefrom". The Squire’s Jars used a combination rubber band and cork to achieve this. The cover illustration depicts a young woman in the process of canning with a steaming pot on the stove in the background and shelves of finished product in the background implying the efficiency of this method which she is employing. Discoloration of one edge of the leaf effecting the illustration; otherwise very good. OCLC locates one copy in an unnamed collection of culinary ephemera; otherwise not located. [printed by] A. As usual the engraved titles with a bit more of the spotting. Generally a very clean and handsome set in unusually nice condition. Bumped to the tail of the spine with a couple of closed tears whereas the cloth flaps to the head of the spine. Front and rear hinge starting. Internally generally firmly bound. The front endpaper and frontispiece are disbound but present and the gutter is visible between pages 112 and 113 128 and 129 and 144 to 145. Heavily foxed to the frontispiece and half title but pages are generally bright and clean otherwise with some moderate foxing to the plates and their surrounding pages.
