Collated complete.In a contemporary imitation walnut lacquered papier-mache binding. Now uncommon these bindings were popular in the mid-Victorian era.Undated; dated 1849 via WorldCat.Written and illustrated by William Henry Bartlett. Bartlett was an illustrator who travelled extensively throughout the Middle East Europe America and the Balkans. During his travels he authored works which he also illustrated. He is best known for his landscape illustrations frequently rendered as steel engravings. In morocco-backed imitation walnut papier mache boards with watered silk endpapers. Significant rubbing to back strip. Rear joint starting with board tenderly held. Boards exceptionally bright. Front hinge strained prior to title page and a touch tender. Internally generally firmly bound but with one plate detached and loosely inserted. Pages generally clean and bright with spotting to first and last few leaves and to pages facing plates. An uncommon work in the striking original green cloth richly decorated with intricate gilt detail to the front board and spine. Featuring the mis-represented title text to the front board: 'Or The Tracks of The Israelites' as opposed to 'On'. Additionally decorated with full gilt text block edges. Featuring a monochrome frontispiece an illustrated half title twenty-five further monochrome plates and a monochrome folding map in addition to monochrome vignette illustrations throughout. Collated complete. Penned and illustrated by British artist William Henry Bartlett who travelled extensively and created sepia wash drawings as he did so to be engraved Only 3 records on jisc. Bound in original green pictorial boards. Externally smart. Mild offsetting to boards. Mild rubbing to spine. Mild shelf wear. Moderate damp stains to board fore edges.
