Bartlett made in all five journeys to the Levant and two to Jerusalem in particular the first in 1842. This is the first work written and illustrated by himself; previously he had illustrated works by others. Collated complete. This work is the result of the Bartlett's visit to Jerusalem in the summer of 1842 providing topographical historical and cultural observations of his walks through the Holy City. With descriptions of the citadel Arab women Jewish antiquities the Church of the Holy Sepulchre the Mosque of Omar and much more.W. H. Bartlett was a British artist best known for his drawings rendered into steel engravings particularly those that depicted ruins or elements of the past. In the original decorative cloth binding. Externally with rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the cloth and a small numbered reference label to the corner of the front board. Rear hinge is starting but firm. Armorial bookplate of one F. E. B. Witts to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Undated dated from Jisc from a copy held at the British Library. A lovely topographical travel work on Jerusalem in the mid nineteenth century. The work discusses ancient Jerusalem and takes the reader of three walks around the city. Illustrated with a frontispiece vignette title page two folding plates twenty-two plates and numerous in-text illustrations. Written and illustrated by William Henry Bartlett a British artist known for his steel engravings. Label to the front pastedown 'Miss L. Wild from W. S. Binns. . in a slight degree his sense of her uniformly good . which a pupil at Highfield Academy Oldman 10 June 1878'. Collated complete. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally generally smart. Crack to the head of the spine and head of the front joint. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Light markings to the boards. A little discolouration to the spine. Prior owner's label to the front pastedown. Bookseller label to the rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Publisher's full black morocco intricate gilt tooling and lettering on boards rebacked with orig. gilt spine laid down. Toning and foxing throughout previous owner signature on front flyleaf else near fine. A curious album of mid-nineteenth-century American trade advertisements printed on the versos of steel-engraved plates by W. H. Bartlett 1809-1854 the popular landscape artist. These must have been remaindered from his popular series of books illustrated with world views. An index at the front of the volume lists the companies included in the advertisements by the merchandise they produced: drugs book-bindings carpets china stained glass engravings ink lamps locks maps pianos spices and more. Most of the businesses are in New York or Boston with other northeast manufacturing centers such as Philadelphia and Troy occasionally represented. Some advertisements are also illustrated. A remarkable picture of antebellum art and commerce. unknown

18280JT157USA 1828. This is a small archive of original handwritten fragments from the pen of Levi Bartlett. Late 1700 early 1800 - 7 pieces of paper in Levi Bartlett 1763-1828 handwriting. Levi was the son of Josiah Bartlett best known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Not easy to read but still legible here are some excerpts: "Ord. 3. Performance of Your Duties.our duties arise from our relations 1. to the Diety 2. Ourselves." "Vertigo by too much nerves Dimness of Sight want of nerve Double Vision too much nerve ." "a. Our duties are 1. to assist the purposes of the Diety in evolving our and others mental powers." Very interesting and certainly worthy of further research. Includes an historical narrative and short biography of Levi Bartlett as well as photocopies of various letters or decrees in Levis hand. Though unsigned it is evident from the addtional photocopied material this is indeed from Levi. Fragile but still very presentable. Very rare. . Autograph. Manuscript. Fair. 64mo - up to 3" tall.
