Frontispiece of Lady Jane Grey which has a few points of resemblance to the Streatham portrait. English noblewoman Lady Jane Grey is one of the most romanticized monarchs of Tudor England. Her short nine-day rule was an unsuccessful attempt to maintain Protestant rule. This challenge cost her the throne and her head. Lady Jane Grey was born in 1537 in Leicester England. Her life began with promise and high expectations but ended tragically due in part to the ambitions of her father and the religious strife of the times. The great-granddaughter of Henry VII Grey was named the successor to Edward VI during a tumultuous competition for the throne. Lincoln" on the front pastedown an ink certification on the verso of the rear free endpaper by Sonya Garfield a notary public for Cook County Illinois attesting to a statement on the rear pastedown by Eugene Field II viz.: "This 'Life' of A. Lincoln came from the library of my father Eugene Field. It is a first edition and bears the original manuscript signature of A. Lincoln. This volume was presented to my father by H. H. Kohlsaat publisher of the Times Herald who was a very dear friend of my father and was prized by him very highly as a very rare Lincoln item. Eugene Field II June 18 1935." With the pressure stamp of Sonya Garfield signatures of two witnesses one Gillespie and a W. Maxwell and the ownership signature of H. H. Kohlsaat crossed out presumably by Field on the front free endpaper. Laid in is a 5" x 4" photograph of Eugene Field by S. L. Stein Milwaukee inscribed at the top "With very much love to H. H. 18210046721821. Hardcover. Leather spine. Good. A manuscript notebook with lovely original folk art oil paintings on both boards and two watercolors within! 4to. 30.5 by 19.5 cm. Unpaginated 18 leaves of wove paper with content followed by a few blanks. Watercolored title page with American eagle atop an orb and pedestal and a beautiful painting of ships bearing the American flag near a lighthouse perched on a rocky spit and a cape house beyond. The paintings on the boards are what strike us as the most unusual though especially because the medium is oils. One is of a windmill and a pastoral setting the other a cow drinking at a pond. Also a faint pencil sketch on the final leaf possibly a draft of one of the two cover paintings and elsewhere a tail vignette of a tombstone. The verse is not credited. The longest selection is "An abbreviation of the Shipwreck" which is in fact an abridged version of Falconer's narrative poem. Another "Epitaph on a Blacksmith" was written by Alexander Pennecuik. A poem entitled "Water" was penned by an Ann Taylor. We thus assume based on the title that most of the poetry was transcribed. The sea is the most common subject but by no means the exclusive one. The alum-tawed leather of the spine is heavily soiled. Repair of the sewing which binds the text block. Rubbing and minor loss on the cover panels. Darkening of the cover paintings. <br /><br /> hardcover books

"5/4 cts Postage" in ink on final blank.<br/><br/> After the Massachusetts Medical Society had expelled him Bartlett sought to revoke the Society's Charter. The case illustrates the early efforts of medical societies to control physicians' treatment of their patients. The Society had tossed Bartlett for praising a physician who the Society contended was a quack. Bartlett said the Society itself "tended to promote quackery." Moreover it sought exclusive privileges for its members and prohibited "consultation with any who do not become members of that body." Witnesses are sworn and testimony presented. 183939320Boston: Dutton & Wentworth 1839. 8vo 25 cm 10". 55 1 pp. <br><br>The cataloguer at the American Antiquarian Society tell us that this tit for tat law suit concerns "the power of the Massachusetts Medical Society to control the practice of medicine in the state. John Stephen Bartlett had been expelled from the Society for malpractice after 'consulting with irregular practitioners and aiding and abetting quacks' namely Patrick Kearney an Irish Catholic physician and John Williams an oculist who had practiced in France. He had therefore petitioned the legislature to declare the charter of the Massachusetts Medical Society void. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â American Imprints 54294; Beal 14867.50; Sabin 3756. Never bound; original stitching perished and all leaves loose; chipping at edges; dust-soiled. One handy with needle and appropriate thread can easily make this right again.
