During the war however he chose to put aside his amusing portraits of French celebrities to work as a war artist and journalist. His war work characteristically mixed humor with tragedy as in his 1917 book Un Pékin sur le Front A Civilian at the Front. His illustrations of French soldiers in Un Pékin undoubtedly served as a model for the infantrymen in this poster.Created late in the war this poster shows Marshal Ferdinand Foch and two members of his staff observing French troops on the march through the shell-cratered terrain of northern France. Following the German-Russian peace treaty of March 1918 the German Army massed its entire military force on the Western Front for a final and formidable assault on the Allied troops. Throughout the war the various Allied troops had failed to work together successfully and in April of 1918 Foch was appointed Supreme Commander of the Allies with a mandate to organize the different national militaries into one powerful army. The depiction of the French advancement as well as the title suggest that this poster was produced during the Hundred Days Offensive August-November 1918 which led to Germany’s defeat.Summary Poster depicting General Ferdinand Foch 1851-1929 overseeing his troops as they march across the battlefield. La préface de Sem donne le ton à cette curiosité éditoriale : "Et ! bien Mademoiselle, vous êtes tout à fait digne de votre papa, et je ne puis vous faire meilleur compliment. Je vous complimente aussi d'avoir osé blaguer les excentricités de la mode que la guerre n'a pu rendre raisonnable. Cette mode sans vergogne a chipé les robes courtes des petites filles pour les passer à leurs mamans... et les petites filles se vengent. C'est bien fait et tant pis pour les mamans". Tirage confidentiel à petit nombre. Chemise à peine défraîchie, sinon bel exemplaire de cet album très rare qui manque à la BnF.

He drew numerous caricatures of his contemporaries published in newspapers such as L'Illustration and Le Rire or in albums of his own. Attending fashionable events in casinos horse races and Parisian cabarets and restaurants he rubbed shoulders with the high society all the time which became his favorite subject of depiction. <br /><br />"Sem had a remarkable ability to capture the characteristic feature of the face rather than providing its likeness. Bolo orchestrated a massive anti-war propaganda campaign in France using $2.5 million in German funds-funneled through the Egyptian Khedive Abbas Hilmi. After the plot was unmasked Bolo who had adopted the title "Bolo Pasha" was convicted of treason and executed by firing squad in April 1918. Across 68 masterful lithographic sketches the renowned caricaturist Sem Georges Goursat documents the tension of the proceedings. His sharp economical lines bring to life the judge the defiant defendant and the parade of witnesses. While Sem is best known for his whimsical depictions of the Belle Epoque elite this work demonstrates his keen eye for the psychological weight of a national crisis. The Bolo Pasha affair involved a French traitor Paul Bolo who convinced the Egyptian Khedive Viceroy Abbas Hilmi to sponsor an anti-war movement in France through the press using $2500000 raised from German sources. Granted the title Pasha by the Khedive Bolo renamed himself Bolo Pasha. Convicted of treason he was executed by a firing squad in April 1918. Sem's caricatures portray the judge defendant witnesses and judges at various points in the trial. Gorsat or Goursat was a French caricaturist and illustrator active from the late nineteenth century to 1934. His lasting fame rests on his depictions of French ruling class and French high society during the Belle Epoque. He was a regular contributor to the leading French periodicals produced albums of caricatures depicting current events and social life and designed several path-breaking advertisements.
