From a signed edition of 300 on Arches paper this number 283. This rare portfolio captures the high-stakes courtroom drama of Paul Bolo a French financier turned traitor. Bolo orchestrated a massive anti-war propaganda campaign in France using $2.5 million in German funds-funneled through the Egyptian Khedive Abbas Hilmi. After the plot was unmasked Bolo who had adopted the title "Bolo Pasha" was convicted of treason and executed by firing squad in April 1918. Across 68 masterful lithographic sketches the renowned caricaturist Sem Georges Goursat documents the tension of the proceedings. His sharp economical lines bring to life the judge the defiant defendant and the parade of witnesses. While Sem is best known for his whimsical depictions of the Belle Epoque elite this work demonstrates his keen eye for the psychological weight of a national crisis. Georges Goursat better known as Sem was the premier social chronicler of his age. A regular contributor to France's leading periodicals his work remains highly esteemed today for its ability to capture the essence of the French ruling class with equal parts wit and precision. unknown

51-4720Paris : Devambez Imp. 1918 . Original lithograph poster. 78 x 116cm. Repaired and mounted on cloth by the artisan binder Sasha Mosalov. .Cette affiche de la Banque nationale de crédit BNC réalisée par l’affichiste Georges Goursat dit Sem 1863-1934 appelle à participer au 4e emprunt de la défense nationale.'''.Georges Goursat who adopted the pseudoymn SEM was a well-known French caricaturist of the Belle Epoque. During the war however he chose to put aside his amusing portraits of French celebrities to work as a war artist and journalist. His war work characteristically mixed humor with tragedy as in his 1917 book Un Pékin sur le Front A Civilian at the Front. His illustrations of French soldiers in Un Pékin undoubtedly served as a model for the infantrymen in this poster.Created late in the war this poster shows Marshal Ferdinand Foch and two members of his staff observing French troops on the march through the shell-cratered terrain of northern France. Following the German-Russian peace treaty of March 1918 the German Army massed its entire military force on the Western Front for a final and formidable assault on the Allied troops. Throughout the war the various Allied troops had failed to work together successfully and in April of 1918 Foch was appointed Supreme Commander of the Allies with a mandate to organize the different national militaries into one powerful army. The depiction of the French advancement as well as the title suggest that this poster was produced during the Hundred Days Offensive August-November 1918 which led to Germany’s defeat.Summary Poster depicting General Ferdinand Foch 1851-1929 overseeing his troops as they march across the battlefield. 187694796Nice: D. Boistier & Fleuedelys Editeur. 1876. First editions of these attractive souvenirs featuring spirited renderings of the carnival procession at Nice in 1876. Both were clearly taken on the spot Giordano's perhaps being the more sophisticated and featuring identifications of some of the floats. These include the Floats of the Beetles and of the Rabbits the Float of Cosmography and the Float of the Kitchen turned Upside-down la Cuisine Renversée with a group of animals feasting on human flesh with a chef hanging in the meat-safe all of which feature in both panoramas. Details of both artists are elusive: neither is listed in Thiemme-Becker or Vollmer and Sem is often confused with the later and better-known caricaturist Georges Goursat who would have been just 13 at the time of publication. Frederick Sem seems to have made some sort of career as an artist-illustrator based in London catering to literary and theatrical circles Blake. Fragile and consequently highly ephemeral these panoramas offer an appealing evocation of the beginnings of the modern carnival in Nice. We locate the Bibliothèque nationale Française copy only of the first-named; the second is unrecorded. Both landscape octavo. Folding lithographic panorama to each 720 and 880 mm long respectively. Original pictorial paper wrappers. A little used a few minor chips and splits misfolds to the panoramas but overall very good. 191055501c.1910. Georges Goursat 1863-1934 known as Sem attained a high level of success with his wonderful portrayals of Paris at the turn of the century. This outstanding caricaturist was a member of the Salon des Humoristes and an officer of the Legion of Honor. His works offer us glimpses into Parisian high society at the turn of the Century. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. Sem captured the spirit of the subject and in turn produced images that were true to life. This wonderful print is a brilliant example of Sem's series "Famous Personalities from Montecarlo" published in Paris c.1910. Size: 725 x 515 mm. Lithograph. Printed colour. Mounted size 855 x 640 mm. Very good condition. unknown

193027102Paris 1930. Folio. 19 3/4 x 13 inches. 16pp. with illustrations coloured using the pochoir process. Stitched wrappers.

A fine copy of this work containing two stories: one of creative hair-dressing and the second of a nose-job.

Georges Goursat moved to Paris in about 1900 and adopted the professional name 'SEM' in honour of the 19th-century illustrator Chaim Amédée de Noé and during his long and very successful working life recorded Paris and the French upper classes during four decades - a speciality was to produce images which are somewhere between straight portraits and outright caricature. He was also capable of more straight-forward illustration satirical work as well as producing a great deal of purely commercial work. unknown
190020752Paris 1900. Very good condition. Lithograph by the French caricaturist 'SEM' Georges Goursat 1863-1934 who was recognized for his caricatures of socialites of the French Belle Epoque and of the people who served their fashion needs. He was active in the early years of the 20th century.

The caricature depicts a bowler hat being produced through 'alchemy' by the famous Paris hat maker Gelot located at the place Vendome. Gelot was the preferred hat maker of King Edward VII; his coat of arms is at the top of the image. The hat maker raises a domed cover or cloche to reveal a freshly produced black bowler hat as steam billows in the background. One has the impression the hat was fashioned or cooked up through some instant proprietary process and all the hat maker had to do was raise the lid to reveal his latest creation. The cloche was perfected by the French as a way of protecting tender plants. Lithograph with stenciled color signed in the plate. Approximately 13 x 19 3/4" unknown
