19234615Paris 1923. Paris: 1923. A lovely hand coloured pochoir taken from the "Album le Nouveau Monde." Second series Published in 1923. A group of cynical looking society people. Nice print. The colours are bright. These pochoirs were printed with some colour and were hand finished. moderate edge wear with some small closed tears and slight nicking to the edge of the sheet slight marking otherwise. Clean but with a touch of foxing to the verso. The original album consisted of 38 plates. 510 by 325mm 20 by 12¾ inches. A copy of this print is held in the wonderful Les Musées de la ville de Paris. Inventory: G.37025. SEM - Georges Goursat 1863–1934 was a French caricaturist famous during the Belle Époque. As well as the caricatures which made him famous he created work in a very different style as a correspondent during World War I. From a signed edition of 300 on Arches paper this number 283. This rare portfolio captures the high-stakes courtroom drama of Paul Bolo a French financier turned traitor. Bolo orchestrated a massive anti-war propaganda campaign in France using $2.5 million in German funds-funneled through the Egyptian Khedive Abbas Hilmi. After the plot was unmasked Bolo who had adopted the title "Bolo Pasha" was convicted of treason and executed by firing squad in April 1918. Across 68 masterful lithographic sketches the renowned caricaturist Sem Georges Goursat documents the tension of the proceedings. His sharp economical lines bring to life the judge the defiant defendant and the parade of witnesses. While Sem is best known for his whimsical depictions of the Belle Epoque elite this work demonstrates his keen eye for the psychological weight of a national crisis. Georges Goursat better known as Sem was the premier social chronicler of his age. A regular contributor to France's leading periodicals his work remains highly esteemed today for its ability to capture the essence of the French ruling class with equal parts wit and precision. unknown

When the creation of Income Tax had terrified the wealthy Sem had imagined the great and the good of this world reduced to small jobs each in his own speciality. In the Café de l'Opera two gentleman in evening dress perform "hunt the ball" tricks. Below is a large man beside his bicycle watching the beach. To the reverse a lady is renting out bathing costumes. There is also a man on a bike selling L'Avenir and a gentleman selling Le Gaulois. Nice print. The colours are bright. These pochoirs were printed with some colour and were hand finished. A good clean sheet slight marking only. 52 by 33 cm. Lorsque la création de l'impôt sur le revenu avait terrifié les riches Sem avait imaginé les grands et les bons de ce monde réduits à de petits métiers chacun dans sa spécialité. Au Café de l'Opéra deux messieurs en tenue de soirée exécutent des tours de "chasse au ballon". En contrebas un grand homme surveille la plage à côté de sa bicyclette. À l'opposé une dame loue des maillots de bain. On voit également un homme à vélo qui vend L'Avenir et un homme qui vend Le Gaulois. Belle impression. Les couleurs sont vives. Ces pochoirs étaient imprimés avec de la couleur et finis à la main. Une bonne feuille propre avec de légères marques. 52 x 33 cm. Caterina Sforza Countess of Forlì early 1463 – 28 May 1509 was an Italian noblewoman the illegitimate daughter of Galeazzo Maria Sforza Duke of Milan and Lucrezia Landriani the wife of the courtier Gian Piero Landriani a close friend of the Duke. Raised in the refined Milanese court pre-eminent among European courts of the 15th century Caterina later held the titles of Lady of Imola and Countess of Forlì by her marriage to Girolamo Riario. She was also the Regent for her first-born son Ottaviano. The descendant of a dynasty of noted condottieri Caterina at an early age distinguished herself by her bold and impetuous actions taken to safeguard her possessions from possible usurpers and to uphold the military defence of her states when they were involved in the myriad political intrigues that were a distinguishing feature of 15th century Italy. In her private life Caterina was devoted to various activities among which were experiments in alchemy and a love of hunting and dancing. She had a large number of children of whom only the youngest Captain Giovanni dalle Bande Nere inherited the forceful militant character of his mother. Following her resistance to him she had to face the vindictive fury of Cesare Borgia who took Caterina as his prisoner. Upon regaining her liberty following her imprisonment in Rome she led a quiet life in Florence. Sem's unique talent made his work very identifiable particularly because of the essential sobriety of his composition in which his characters usually emerge from a white or plain background rather than being more obvious caricatures. There seem to have been two different versions of this publication as all of those available online have either eight or ten illustrated sheets. These celebrities are happy to confirm their love of drinking Bénédictine! Boards are a little darkened with some marking to the bottom edge and a touch of loss to the open edge. The preface two leaves folded is darkened to the first page. The plates are in mostly in good clean condition although some have a touch of edgewear to them. Undated. Il semble y avoir eu deux versions différentes de cette publication car toutes celles disponibles en ligne comportent soit huit soit dix feuilles illustrées. Ces célébrités sont heureuses de confirmer leur amour pour la Bénédictine ! Les couvertures sont légèrement noircies avec quelques marques sur le bord inférieur et une légère perte sur le bord ouvert. La préface deux feuilles pliées est noircie sur la première page. Les planches sont pour la plupart en bon état bien que certaines présentent une légère usure sur les bords. Non daté. Vers 1910. 245 x 170 mm 9¾ x 6¾ pouces. Très bel exemplaire.
