Acting as governor of the newly seceded state of Virginia Letcher appointed Robert E. Lee who had recently resigned his commission in the U. S. Army as commander in chief of Virginia’s army and naval forces. After the Civil War Letcher served as a member of the House of Delegates in the Virginia General Assembly 1875-1877.
