One chip light soil. Captioned "XLVI. Une vilaine commission." with signature on plate. J. J. Grandville born Jean-Ignace Isidore Gerard 1803-1847 was a famous French cartoonist known for his satirical caricature anthropomorphizing animals. Large 8vo. 270 x 195 mm bound in contemporary full decorated morocco with the original front and rear wrappers preserved. Paris: H. Fournier 1844. A desirable copy of the first edition of Grandville's masterpiece. One of the spectacular surreal illustrated books of the nineteenth century. "In this remarkable book of the boldest possible originality Grandville dared to reveal his dream world to the public" Ray. The illustrations expose an imagination which was unlike anything that appeared in print before. Ray points out that the designs of Grandville certainly influenced Tenniel when he created the characters for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. In this copy all the hand-coloured plates have captions in white letter as per Rebeyrat except for that of the "Bal Masqué" and "Apocalypse du Ballet" which are in black letter. Despite some staining and foxing to the text pages throught this is still an outstanding copy in a contemporary binding preserving the rare celebrated front and rear wrappers. Exteremely rare thus. These allusions pass largely unnoticed today but Grandville's animals remain as amusing as ever thanks to the wit and verve of his compositions. The types and situations he depicts are indeed "of every period and every country." "The final plate shows the artist at the zoo of the Jardin des Plantes. He is sketching the visiting creatures who in turn are peering at cages containing Hetzel Balzac Jules Janin and other authors of the Scènes de la vie privée et publique des animaux. They show that his powers remained unimpaired to the end of his short career. Grandville told his wife on the day he began these designs: ‘for too long I have kept my eyes lowered to the earth; now I want to lift them to the heavens' p. ix. This copy with superb hand colouring to the engravings belongs to a hitherto undescribed edition with a separate pagination for the two parts. Of all his works Les Fleurs Animées was Grandville's own personal favorite. In the fifty hand-coloured plates Grandville portrays a flower or plant metamorphosized into a lady clad in the petals or leaves particular to that flower or plant. Further his flower turned human exhibits the human personality traits which Grandville perceives as characteristic of the species he is illustrating. Les Fleurs Animées is "a little world created and governed by its own laws which was full of significance for Grandville " Ray. Occasional inoffensive foxing not detracting from the finely coloured plates. Two tipped on gilt-stamped pieces from the spine missing. Now rare in the publisher's binding. Quarter red morocco with blindstamped red pebbled cloth covers which perfectly match appears full red leather. Raised spine bands and gilt. Rubbing around gutters and the raised bands and some typical shelfwear besides. Endpapers are a silky moire material and they have some soiling.
