'Printed for Private Circulation' on t.p. f/piece portrait with tissue-guard316 plate with tissue-guardof his memorial in Rectory Place Chapel Woolwich facing p.314; major fault is excision of nearly all front endpaper leaving 2 cm. strip along gutter otherwise clean aside from occ. small faint tanning spots to t.p. and last leaf quite unmarked and tight with good end-gutters top edge has some ingrained dustiness; bevelled edge covers excellent being bright and clean with no significant wear blind-stamped top and bottom edge borders. Islands visited included Raratonga Samoa Eromanga New Hebrides and Maniiki. 18995072Genéve: S.A.D.A.G. 1899. A lovely French advertising programme for plays showing in February 1899. Probably for a Paris theatre. The sheet intended to be folded in half has on the one side a full page advert for "Un chapeau de Paille d'Italie" a comedie by Labiche. This is illustrated by Edmond Filliard. Black and white. To the other side of the sheet are two pieces. One is an advert for "Le Beau Léandre" by Banville illustrated by Gill. The other is a poem showing a poster man putting up an advert to a wall. This is also by Filliard and has the only flash of colour to the sheet. A small text in red to the presumably rear panel shows that the phototype was produced by S.A.D.A.G. of Geneva. Société Anonyme des Arts Graphiques Genève. 41.5cm x 25.5cm. Single sheet. We cannot find copies of this ephemeral object. . Joli programme publicitaire français pour des pièces de théâtre jouées en février 1899. La feuille destinée à être pliée en deux comporte au recto une pleine page de publicité pour "Un chapeau de Paille d'Italie" une comédie de Labiche. Celle-ci est illustrée par Edmond Filliard. Noir et blanc. De l'autre côté de la feuille se trouvent deux pièces. L'une est une publicité pour "Le Beau Léandre" de Banville illustré par Gill. L'autre est un poème montrant un colleur d'affiches en train de coller une publicité sur un mur. Il s'agit également d'un poème de Filliard qui présente le seul éclat de couleur de la feuille. Orange endpapers. Text block in good condition. Light foxing to the extremities. Former owner's signature on the title page. Reverend William Wyatt Gill 1828 – 1896 was an English missionary who worked in Australia and the South Pacific region. In this volume Gill recorded indigenous myths and songs. He noted that while myth and history must be carefully distinguished when hostile groups agreed on a specific narrative he believed that it had significance. Flush-cut card lettered in gilt on the front cover a little foxed and nicked with a chip to the foot of the spine; a very good copy. Harry Pelling Gill 1855-1916 art curator and teacher at the time Director for Technical Art. 'In 1892 he was appointed honorary curator of the art gallery and following the resignation in December of Louis Tannert as master of the school of painting Gill assumed control of all the board's art teaching activities. His growing authority in art matters his self-confidence and abrasive manner and his attitude toward other art schools led to criticism. Critics found Gill a vain man who controlled lucrative and influential art offices and who disdained the democratic brotherhood of art. His supporters admitted that he could be uncompliant and disagreeable but said that he had worked hard was a good judge of the monetary value of pictures saved the board expense and was a courageous and incorruptible curator. He supported and reorganized the South Australian Society of Arts and was its first president elected from the fellows 1909-11' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'; this entry contains one of the few errors we have noted in the ADB - the title of this book is given as 'The Straight and Crooked Paths of Studentship'. Original orange cloth with black lettering and a decorative border; flyleaves offset; a fine copy. Prepared for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London in 1886; with a presentation inscription from the author to J.G.O. Tepper. 'It is to be regretted that some legislation was not passed in the early days of the colony enforcing the lodgment in the South Australian Institute of a copy of every colonial publication' from the author's preface. An eight-page bibliography of the Northern Territory plus extra material in the appendix is included. With the later pencilled ownership initials of Tom Austen Brown. J.G.O.
