The Prospectus for this work is loosely inserted with Gill's pencil calculations to the final page as to how much money each variant of the edition will bring in - a total of £3192 plus a press cutting and a couple of other pieces of ephemera inserted as well. The ultimate copy of a scarce title - the first collection of Gill's work including his magnificent illustrations for several Golden Cockerel Press books as well as designs for the St. Dominic's Press and many other ephemeral pieces. Gill's Preface sets out his unique philosophy concluding with two pages of Latin. "Whatever may be said of life it remains that in art desire may be feeble or insufficient but it can never be wrong; it is the intellect that makes mistakes". Next to the sentence "Being a Catholic I naturally accepted the Catholic faith - as one intending to go to Peterborough naturally takes the train there" Gill has written "Why Peterboro' because it was in the train to Peterboro' that this part of this preface was written. The book is a tiny treasure -- the title-page has a lovely device printed in red and the colophon has a large woodcut map of the location of Pigotts where Gill lived and worked at that time. 19282221843<p>SUPERB WATERCOLOR COCKTAIL SCENE</p><p>Fine original watercolor and pencil drawing of a crowded patio sidewalk cafe scene with 21 standing and seated figures smartly dressed enjoying cocktails as their waiters circulate. In the back ground are two vignettes bar scenes with shelves stocked with various liqueurs. In one vignette a man sips his cocktail at the bar. This may well be the Cafe-de la Terrasse near the French village of Salies-de-Bearn where Eric Gill and daughter Joanna spent time in 1928. 11" x 15 1/4". Signed in lower left corner and dated 1928. Very good several small pin holes.</p><p>From the collection of Eric Gill. With architectural drawings and referencing Troilus & Criseyde. Gill writes to his friend J.G. Wilson of the Bumpus Bookshop in London regarding his engraving "Flying Buttresses" mentioning his work on Troilus & Criseyde for the Golden Cockerel Press and mentioning another of his publishers. An excellent technical letter with 5 small drawings in the text. In part: "I am working like anything on the engravings for the Golden Cockerel Troilus & Criseyde. I expect to finish the engravings by about Easter . I shall come and see you as soon as possible to talk over things and explain how it happened that D. Cleverdon is publishing my next . Meanwhile this is just to make a brief apology for myself in the matter of the Buttresses! Is matter of fact they aren't so blooming wrong in the engraving as your correspondent thinks. It's the perspective which makes the difficulty." The engraving in question is "Flying Buttresses" based on a drawing of St. Pierre Chartes used to illustrated Gill's 1926 essay "Id Quod Visum Placet." Gill uses the rest of the letter to explain with the aid of five small sketches why the perspective is in fact correct. Douglas Cleverdon the Bristol bookseller and publisher brought out Gill's Art and Love in 1927 as well as a collection of his engravings in 1929. unknown books

Evan Gill in his bibliography notes the following: Although the printing was completed on June 30th 1927 the book wasn't published until march 1928. 225 ordinary copies were issued numbered and signed by Gill and bound in black buckram at 21 shillings and 35 special copies numbered 1-35 bound in full vellum and signed by Gill were issued at 2 quineas although 25 of the ordinary and 5 of the special edition were not for sale. --Evan Gill. Three letters to Dr. Alfred Charles Jordan 1872-1956 British radiologist co-founder of the New Heath Society and Honorary Secretary of the Men's Dress Reform Party. In the letter of June 9 Gill agrees to present a copy of his book Clothes 1931 at the upcoming revel of the MDRP and says he's asked his publisher Cape to send a copy for him to autograph. In the letter of June 17 he encloses the book and thanks Jordan for tickets to the event saying he will "certainly come . unless run over or in jug." In the letter of July 2 he writes "I did enjoy the evening at Suffolk St. very much. But I was sorry so many of the men were merely in 'fancy' dress." He also accepts Jordan's invitation to have his name added to the organization's permanent committee. Accompanying the group is a Typed Letter Signed of Gill dated May 13 1936 in which Gill requests four issues of the MDRP publication. <br/><br/>The subtitle of Gill's "Clothes" is "An essay upon the nature and significance of the natural and artificial integuments worn by men and women." In it Gill presents many ideas on dress reform for both men and women among which was his advocacy the skirt or tunic by both men and women a style that Gill himself adopted.<br/><br/>The Men's Dress Reform Party was active from 1929-1940 and grew out of discussions within the Clothing Subcommittee of the New Health Society which had been co-founded by Dr. Jordan in 1925. Album 1: Green faux-leather covers gilt title decoration to front sting bound 59 black paper leaves each with two photographs recto mounted 118 prints total; well preserved near fine. Album 2: Ivory faux-leather covers gilt title decoration to front 20 black paper leaves 19 with recto mounted photographs most two to a page final leaf blank; crease through center of front cover otherwise clean contents near fine. <br/><br/>A fantastic pair of albums capturing 1970 Poughkeepsie NY area regional country music acts venues and patrons. Prints almost entirely uniform in size measuring approximately 3.5” square many date stamped outside the image area. The first album shows spots in and around Poughkeepsie primarily the Brand X Corral bar on Rt. 94 in Vails Gate NY. Acts include Gil Rogers whose albums we suspect these were based on internal evidence The Country Cousins and Country Skyline. The second album follows Rogers down to West Virginia for his performance during the 1970 Eastern States Country Music Convention on the famed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling’s Capitol Theater. Rogers recorded a handful of honky-tonk singles in the early 1970’s on the Stop label and enjoyed regional success as a performer for decades. These amateur images show the elaborate stage dress music gear and social settings of Woodstock-era country music. That famed festival was held less than a year earlier and some 35 miles from where most of the images shown here were snapped though one could be forgiven for guessing they were taken years and miles apart. An album that demonstrates how this blue collar form adhered to traditions and fans throughout the cultural sea changes of the late 1960s and early 70s and a colorful portrait of a working regional musician. hardcover books

Sir Edward Brantwood Maufe 1882-1974 was a friend sometime collaborator and longtime patron of Gill. Swain's tales share many features with those of James' and draw on the friends' common interests and antiquarian studies. They are however rather milder in tone and regularly incorporate a playful humour not often found in James' work. The tales relate the adventures of a fictionalized version of the author Mr Batchel Rector of Stoneground parish.
