André Gill machte sich einen Namen als der Karikaturist des zweiten Kaiserreichs bei der Zeitschrift "La Lune". Nach deren Verbot, sie hatte sich mit Darstellungen von Napoleon III. unbeliebt gemacht, zeichnete er von 1868 bis 1876 für das Nachfolgejournal L'Eclipse weiter. Seine Karikaturen gerieten immer wieder in das Blickfeld der Zensur, so bereits in der Ausgabe L'Eclipse vom 9. August. Dort hatte Gill unter der Überschrift "Monsieur X...?" einen mit Armen und Beinen versehenen Kürbis dargestellt, in welchem man den Kopf eines Richters wiederzuerkennen glaubte. Der Prozess brachte ihm nicht nur die Anerkennung der Boheme ein, sondern auch einige Monate Gefängnis. Die hervorragenden, datierten Karikaturen, entstanden in der Zeit vom 23. September 1866 bis 28 April 1870. Schönes Exemplar dieser extrem seltenen Veröffentlichung. Kein Exemplar seit 30 Jahren im Handel nachweisbar.

Kemp Waldie, and also contains items from the Fisher Library and the Library of the University of Waterloo. It illustrates the varied aspects of Gill's career, with special emphasis on his graphic art and book illustration. The catalogue, by Alan Horne, Richard Landon, and Guy Upjohn won a first place award from the Rare Books and Manuscripts Sections of the American Library Association, and two design awards from the National Composition and Prepress Association.
