Zu ihren bekanntesten und fesselndsten Werken gehören ihre «Familienalben» über indische Diaspora-Gemeinschaften in Amerika The Americans Dorfgemeinschaften in Nordwest-Indien und afghanische Inder in Delhi. Während der letzten zehn Jahre beschäftigte sich Gill mit ländlichen Gemeinschaften in Rajasthan.Im Jahr 2003 organisierte die NGO Urmul Setu Sansthan eine Balika Mela ein Jahrmarkt für Mädchen im Dorf Lunkaransar der von rund 1500 Mädchen aus siebzig der umliegenden Dörfer besucht wurde – Stände Performances Riesenrad Spiele Zauberer Puppenspiele und Wettbewerbe.Neben den üblichen Attraktionen wurden «Schein-Wahlen» mock elections durchgeführt um die Jugendlichen für demokratische Wahlprozesse zu sensibilisieren. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung fotografierte Gill die Teilnehmerinnen in einem temporären Fotostudio.«An der Mela betrieb ich einen Fotostand wo sich die Mädchen poträtieren lassen konnten. Ich hatte einige elementare Requisiten und Kulissen aufgetrieben – alles was wir im örtlichen Dorf und für unser begrenztes Budget kriegen konnten. Alles war ziemlich minimal eingerichtet und da es staubig war und wir draussen in der Wüste waren wurde sowieso alles weggeblasen. Viele der interessanten Requisiten wie Pfauen und Papierhüte brachten die Mädchen jedoch selbst mit. Einzelne Mädchen Freundinnen Schwestern Mädchen mit ihren Lehrerinnen oder ganze Klassen liessen sich abbilden – später bekamen sie alle Schwarz-Weiss-Abzüge ihrer Porträts zu einem reduzierten Preis. Einige der Mädchen lernten in den Workshops die wir im Mai 2003 veranstalteten zu fotografieren und dokumentierten zwei Jahre später den Jahrmarkt ihrerseits.» Gauri GillIm Jahr 2010 kehrte Gill an die «Mela» zurück und eröffnete nach einer langen Pause eine Ausstellung der Porträts von 2003. Viele der abgebildeten Mädchen waren wieder dort oder andere die die Porträtierten kannten. Gill fotografierte wieder dieses Mal in Farbe.
