These are a touch darkened but sound. 87 numbered full page caricatures printed to recto of each leaf. ONE OF THE UNDISPUTED MASTERPIECES OF 1890s LITHOGRAPHY a sardonic and desultory and yet subtly humorous portrayal in ten lithographs on fine Chinese paper of the life of "Madame Whoever" a typical woman of the Parisian bourgeoisie. Even as her life passes before our eyes her face is never revealed to us. Each lithograph measures 41 x 31.5 cm. They are loose as issued in the original lithographed folder with the series title and the titles of the individual lithographs printed lithographically on the front cover which is also numbered in pencil and SIGNED by the artist with his monogram. Signed and dedicated.Rene Georges Hermann-Paul born in Paris he trained as a painter at both the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and the Academie Julian. Hermann-Paul’s prints and caricatures established his reputation by the beginning of the twentieth century. His drawings for Le Courrier Francais starting in 1894 and for Le Rire as well as his active support of Alfred Dreyfus led to involvement with anarchist journals. A satirist of bourgeois values cynical abrasive and even rude in his depictions Hermann-Paul was an active social commentator for more than three decades although in his last years his politics moved decisively towards the right. Provenance: Jacques Cathy - Né en 1906 à Lezay Deux-Sèvres Jacques Cathy a exercé d’abord la profession de caricaturiste à l’hebdomadaire « Le Rire ». Il a rejoint vers 1927 l’équipe du Cabaret « La Vache Enragée » conduite par Roger Toziny. Jacques Cathy poursuit sa carrière de chansonnier après le décès de Toziny en 1939 et après la guerre il conduit parallèlement une carrière d’acteur dans le cinéma. An exceptional copy marked 'Hors Tirage' and including all of Hermann-Paul's original drawings.From the edition limited to 300 copies with this unique example inscribed 'hors tirage originaux' and including all of Hermann-Paul's original drawings for the work each initialled 'HP' in pencil.As well as all 51 of the drawings for the book executed in ink and initialled by Hermann-Paul in pencil many of these also feature pencil attributions as to place by the artist the imprint for the cover has been effaced and marked 'Chez / l'Auteur' presumably by Hermann-Paul himself the justification has been altered to reflect this unique copy marked 'Hors tirage originaux' as above and the title imprint has been effaced; the original illustrations for the covers have also been included together with a version of the title itself executed in ink.The vignette for the rear cover is inscribed in pencil by Hermann-Paul as follows: 'croquis pour le cul de lampe de l'album 'Sur le Rhône' / c'est le St. Nicolas patron des bateliers du Rhône qui est au / Musée d'Arles. / Hermann-Paul'.
