Signed and dedicated.Rene Georges Hermann-Paul born in Paris he trained as a painter at both the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and the Academie Julian. Hermann-Paul’s prints and caricatures established his reputation by the beginning of the twentieth century. His drawings for Le Courrier Francais starting in 1894 and for Le Rire as well as his active support of Alfred Dreyfus led to involvement with anarchist journals. A satirist of bourgeois values cynical abrasive and even rude in his depictions Hermann-Paul was an active social commentator for more than three decades although in his last years his politics moved decisively towards the right. Provenance: Jacques Cathy - Né en 1906 à Lezay Deux-Sèvres Jacques Cathy a exercé d’abord la profession de caricaturiste à l’hebdomadaire « Le Rire ». Il a rejoint vers 1927 l’équipe du Cabaret « La Vache Enragée » conduite par Roger Toziny. Jacques Cathy poursuit sa carrière de chansonnier après le décès de Toziny en 1939 et après la guerre il conduit parallèlement une carrière d’acteur dans le cinéma. Even as her life passes before our eyes her face is never revealed to us. Each lithograph measures 41 x 31.5 cm. They are loose as issued in the original lithographed folder with the series title and the titles of the individual lithographs printed lithographically on the front cover which is also numbered in pencil and SIGNED by the artist with his monogram. Bound in a lovely Randeynes art nouveau binding with half leather gilt titles and blind stamped design to the spine. Marbled boards. The binding is a touch rubbed but overall in sound condition. Signed J.D. to the base of the spine. Binder's label to the verso of the marbled end paper. Original soft covers bound in. These are a touch darkened but sound. 87 numbered full page caricatures printed to recto of each leaf. René Georges Hermann-Paul 1864-1940 designed caricatures for L'assiette au Beurre Le Sourire Je suis partout. 20cm x 14cm. . Un très bel exemplaire de cette première édition. Relié dans une belle reliure art nouveau de Randeynes en demi-cuir avec titres dorés et motifs estampés à froid au dos. Les plats sont marbrés. La reliure est un peu frottée mais dans l'ensemble en bon état. Signé J.D. à la base du dos. Étiquette du relieur au verso du papier marbré de la fin de l'ouvrage. Les couvertures souples d'origine sont reliées. Elles sont un peu assombries mais en bon état. 87 caricatures à pleine page numérotées imprimées au recto de chaque feuille.
