In 1846 after rumors that the Mexican Republic was going to expel all non-citizens he led a group of settlers in what became known as the Bear Flag Revolt after the California Bear Flag raised as they took control of the Sonoma pueblo. Ide was named Commander of the California Republic. Afterwards most of the party joined Lieut. Col. John C. Fremont in seizing California from Mexico. Uriel Crocker was a founder of leading Boston publishers Crocker & Brewster and later sat on the board of several railroad companies including the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad South Pacific Railroad and St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad. <br> <br> "This SKETCH contains an account of the early years of W.B. Ide recollections by his daughter of the family's trip across the plains to California in 1845 and an account of the Bear Flag revolt of 1846 as told by Ide to his brother in 1849 and in a letter to a Senator Wambough which as Ide died in 1852 must have been written within a few years of the event. 1825137394c. 1825. Rare hand-colored engraved map of Asia by American cartographers Nathaniel and Simeon Smith Jocelyn. One page hand-colored. In very good condition. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 13 inches by 11.5 inches. At the turn of the 19th century brothers Nathaniel and Simeon Smith founded the N. and S.S. Jocelyn Publishing Company focusing mainly on engravings. In 1823 they published along with family friend Jedediah Morse an Atlas of the United States unknown

Baldwin was a jurist law professor at Yale co-founder and president of the American Bar Association and Governor of Connecticut. The letter reads: "Dear Mr. DeLancey I think you will see the Hartford & Harlem road begun within a year. It is being fought by the old Parallel scheme promoted by the New York New Haven & Harlem road; but we have nevertheless obtained most of the legislation needed. I take pleasure in sending you a copy of my historical paper recently printed. Yours sincerely Simeon E. Baldwin." Softcover bound in printed tan wraps titled within a decorative ruled frame in black on the front cover. The covers are stained and heavily chipped with pieces out from corners of the front cover. The rear cover is partially detached and the spine has perished. 61 pages with the text printed in 2 columns. The book is folded vertically down the center and the edges of the pages are darkened. The corners of several pages are creased and a few are slightly chipped. Good.</p><p>First edition.</p><p>The 1855-56 trial for heresy of one of its most popular pastors the Rev. Simeon Brown was the most memorable event in the history of the First Presbyterian Church of Lebanon's history. Held at the Church in front of the Miami Presbytery Rev. Brown was charged with unsoundness of faith for denying the doctrine of limited atonement. His beliefs which were cited in the charges included those that "Christ gave his life for the world and it is absurd to limit the word world to the elect." The Presbytery found him guilty and Rev. Brown subsequently wrote in his defense that "I maintained that our Lord Jesus Christ is a Savior provided for and sincerely offered in the Gospel to all who hear it but the Presbytery held that He is provided for the elect only." Found guilty of this one charge the sympathy of the public was chiefly with him and the members of his church were mostly on his side. Rev. Brown chose to separate from the Presbyterian Church and the trial led to the formation of the Lebanon Congregational Church.</p> Lebanon, Ohio: Printed at the Western Star Office, 1856. paperback
