Land grant to Thomas Randall for a commercial site in Castlereagh Street in central Sydney

18044307506Sydney: Government House 1804. Folded and a little aged yet very good condition. Vellum sheet measuring 330 x 230 mm. with manuscript notations to both faces including a site-sketch with measurements. Early Sydney lease signed by Governor Philip Gidley King for an allotment in the centre of Sydney Town with a sketch of the site executed and signed by colonial surveyor George William Evans. Simeon Lord emancipee and to become a prominent mercantile figure in the Colony was apparently keen to acquire this allotment for he paid the considerable sum of £325 for the remainder of the lease in 1807. The location of the lease in the immediate vicinity of the Dry Store on Spring Row later Castlereagh Street was ideal for a merchant. Earlier he had constructed his private residence in close proximity to the Dry Store allowing officers of merchant vessels docked in the harbour to stay in his house while remaining close to valuable cargo and merchandise held in the Dry Store. King was a pivotal figure in the early history of Australian settlement. His skill as a naval officer attracted the respect of Captain Arthur Phillip who selected him as second lieutenant of the First Fleet convict transport Sirius. Prior to assuming the position of Governor in 1800 King served in Sydney and Norfolk Island and was widely respected for his skilled leadership through the difficult early years of settlement. Governor King awarded the seven year lease to Thomas Randall in May 1804 for a ground rent of 10 shillings per year. The subsequent early history of the site is recorded in two manuscript notes detailing further sale contracts to the reverse of this lease. It was first sold on to Edward Wells who then on-sold the lease to Sydney merchant Simeon Lord the prominent colonial entrepreneur who rose from humble beginnings Lord was transported to New South Wales in 1791. He began his trading career selling rum outside the monopoly controlled by the officers of the New South Wales Corps and later invested in land shipping and manufacturing throughout the colony. This lease is noteworthy for the inclusion of the site sketch by George Evans the colony's surveyor from 1803 but also a notable early colonial artist and inland explorer. The grant is fully signed 'Philip Gidley King' and the sketch is likewise signed 'G.W. Evans acting surveyor'. Examples of Gidley King's signature are uncommon on the market and this grant is not listed in the standard reference Land Grants 1788-1809 edited by R.J. Ryan. . Government House unknown

Map of the State of New York by Simeon De Witt Surveyor General Contracted from his large Map of the State

181225627New York 1812. Engraved map hand-coloured in outline sectioned and linen-backed at a contemporary date. Housed in a black morocco backed box. Unique copy of De Witt's important 1804 map of New York with county divisions updated to 1812. In 1778 George Washington appointed Simeon De Witt as the assistant to Robert Erskine the first Geographer and Surveyor General of the United States a position De Witt attained several years later. Following the war De Witt became the first Surveyor General of New York a position he held for an unprecedented fifty years. Among his first acts was to create the definitive first map of the state based on actual surveys. Following the settlement of the state's boundaries and accurate surveys which he directed De Witt published a large wall map in 1802 - the first map of the state and the progenitor of similar mappings in other states. Two years later De Witt issued this "contracted" version of his wall map intending its circulation to meet a wider audience. According to Allen however the map which was sold by subscription "does not seem to have been as widely distributed as its predecessor although it appears to have been designed to reach a wider audience. It may be that De Witt's 1804 map was unable to find a niche in competition with other small-scale maps of the state such as those of Samuel Lewis" Allen. Nevertheless as Streeter commented De Witt's 1804 map is "one of the earliest separate folding maps of New York after it became a state." Interestingly the present copy suggests that De Witt or an enterprising mapseller made an additional attempt to market this map. This copy of the 1804 map is updated to 1812; that is the map is as printed in 1804 but the county boundaries shown via period hand colouring depicts the state in 1812: the far western counties established in 1808 are clearly delineated e.g. Chautauqua Cattaraugus and Niagara counties but Erie County created in 1821 is not shown; Putnam county is shown separate from Dutchess County as per its establishment in 1812; Oneida County is shown with its western boundary on Lake Ontario i.e. before the 1816 establishment of Oswego County; among other additions. In all the state is divided into 47 counties. We find no other example of De Witt's 1804 map altered in this fashion. The exactness and appearance of the colouring however suggests it to be a distinct issue of the map or done for some official purpose as opposed to an early owner's mere manuscript addition. Six volumes small octavo pp 588; 600 15; 584 10 uncut a few pages unopened a little age-toning and marking one gathering 347-350 in Volume IV detached and gatherings towards the rear of the volume becoming a bit weak and loose Volume VI has extra bis pages 343 - 354; very well illustrated with 197 engraved or wood engraved plates of which 31 are folding and 50 coloured plates of which 2 are folding and 1 folding table; bound in the original pink boards a bit worn chipped and marked original printed paper labels on the spines the upper cover of Volume V detached otherwise firm and tight a neat signature on each front endpaper. Apparently lacking one plate in Volume 1 Relative Sizes of the Planets though there is no sign of this ever having been bound in. There are several extra plates to those listed and our copy would seem to agree with the set at auction at Christie's in 2006 which contained 246 of 248 plates. A work of considerable charm and interest and despite some faults as mentioned a remarkable set in original unsophisticated state. Simeon Ackroyd Shaw 1785 - 1859 was a 19th-century English scientific writer industrial historian and teacher. He spent his working life in the Staffordshire Potteries now the city of Stoke-on-Trent England. Shaw originated in Lancashire and as a young man he arrived in the Potteries to work on the Potteries Gazette and Newcastle-under-Lyme Advertiser newspaper. After some 20 years of newspaper and printing work living in Wolstanton he then went into teaching. He ran several teaching academies in the district. His first book was this 6-volume work which was based on his obviously very comprehensive series of popular short lectures on everything from natural species to meteorites. First Edition. Boards. 182545146Fall River MA 1825. Very good folded minor tearing moderate ink bleed through light soiling. 3 pp. Bifolium. 8 x 9.5 inches. September 19th 1825 with integral address to Andrew Roberson a whaling merchant from New Bedford who was expanding his textile empire into Fall River Borden writes about his survey of several possible roads throughout the area. The actual plot he notes he will bring when they meet. "I have since I last saw you explored and surveyed the route that we talked of when I last saw you that is to say I measured from the line that was run from the narrows to Smith's Mills to the northern extremities of the easterly swamps and find them to terminate not much different form what we talked of. The west swamp or the swamp that we first enter as we proceed eastward from the Woodle Corner towards the northern extremities of the easterly swamps I did not find to be as feasible as I anticipated the swamp being. "I have also surveyed the route by you suggested from Mingo's Corner to the corner that has been uniformly talked of. its name if it has any I do not now recollect of ever having heard - I can say that I now think that it is the best possible route for a road from the narrows to fallriver." Simeon Borden 1798-1856 was a surveyor who later invented equipment considered to have the most accurate measuring capabilities which allowed him to undertake major surveying projects throughout his career. His most high-profile endeavors include the Massachusetts base line now known as the Borden Base Line; and the boundary line between Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Andrew Roberson 1787-1842 ."amassed a fortune in many different interests. He owned an oil refinery that was listed on "Ray Street" or what is now known as Acushnet Avenue a cotton mill in Fall River named the Andrew Robeson Mills built a wharf in Fall River and owned a massive whaling ship called The Pacific 2.he is considered to be the pioneer of cloth printing in the city of Fall River where he came in 1824. His son carried on the business in the city and on the land given to him by his father built the Andrew Robeson House which now houses the Fall River Historical Society. hardcover

"The legitimacy of the application of the calculus to areas relating to the moral order that is to say within the broad area of what is now called the humanistic sciences was bitterly disputed beginning in 1820 in politically conservative circles as well as by Saint-Simonians and by such philosophers as Auguste Comte. Poisson was bold enough to take pen in hand to defend the universality of the probabilistic thesis and to demonstrate the conformability to the order of nature of the regularities that the calculus of probability without recourse to hidden causes reveals when things are subjected to a great number of observations. It is to Poisson that we owe the term 'law of large numbers'. He improved Laplace's work by relating it explicitly to Jacob Bernoulli's fundamental theorem and by showing that the invariance in the prior probabilities of mutually exclusive events is not a necessary condition for calculating the approximate probabilities. It is also from Poisson that we derive the study of a problem that Laplace had passed over the case of great asymmetry between opposite events such that the prior probability of either event is very small" DSB.
