180239495Londres London: chez Pougens. 1802. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo; 101 1 bl 1 errata & colophon pages; Modern tan quarter calf over marbled boards flat spine lettered in gilt. Title page with a two-line presentation inscription by the author in French. Neat professional repair to a marginal tear from the fore-edge of the title page tear intersects but does not damage one printed letter of the title but otherwise takes a path across 3" 8cm of the blank margin. An interesting treatise on the medicinal use of a lichen in the treatment of tuberculosis. With a lovely full page colored plate depicting the plant 'Lichen islandicus' - which the author calls in English: "Eryngo-Leaved Lichen". The author Jean-Baptiste Étienne Benoît Olive Regnault 1759-1836 was born in Niant France in 1759. He practiced medicine in Paris before the Revolution of 1789 and became président of the section of Saint-Eustache in that same year. Regnault was a member of the faculty of medicine at l'hôpital du Gros-Caillou in 1791. In 1792 he was attached to the army of the Moselle where he got into serious trouble for treating immigrants against military orders. Regnault found it advisable to leave France and first went to Hamburg to practice and then took up residence in London where this interesting treatise appeared both in this French text version De l'imprimerie de L. Nardini No. 15 Poland Street -- according to the colophone on the verso of the last leaf and also in a translation into English. 'Observations on pulmonary consumption or an essay on the lichen islandicus considered both as an aliment and a medicine in that disorder' - London : Printed for the Author by J. Smeeton and sold by Johnson etc. 1802. I cannot determine which of these 1802 editions was issued first but it is interesting to note that the English-language text printed by J. Smeeton occupies 82 pages rather than the 101 required by the French edition. The handsome hand-colored plate is the same in both editions I want to thank the Wellcome Library for including a link to an excellent electronic image of the plate in their copy of the English edition; Wellcome also has a copy of the second edition in English 1806 which had grown to iv & 111pp and apparently had an advertisement leaf at end for 'Huguenin no. 33 Haymarket; the only warehouse for the genuine lichen islandicus'. see Record no. 11271385 -English 1802; 27269030 for the 1806 edition. See also OCLC Number: 14527807 for this 1802 French edition which cites several locations including Harvard. Scarce in the trade. Dr. Regnault returned to his native France after the fall of Napoleon and was appointed physician to Louis XVIII; in 1816 he was the founder of the 'Journal des sciences médicales.' He also published 'Considérations sur l'état de la médecine en France depuis la Révolution' 1819 -- and 'Mémoire sur les altérations et l'influence du foie dans plusieurs maladies' 1820.; Signed by Author . chez Pougens hardcover
