The text underneath the scene reads "Go away phylloxera!" equating the solider with a pest to grapevines. A French soldier stands behind the conflict smiling jovially and drinking wine. The poster advertises October 15 a day to support war work in the French department of the Herault. The complete set of this rare journal with the always missing last two numbers of the third year no. 1 March 20th 1891 and special numb er from March 5th 1891. Satirical literary journal headed and illustrated by Adolphe Willette. Each issue consists of 2 folio-leaves with a lithograph by Willette on the first page and caricatures on the third page. The journal includes poetry advertisement news etc. but the real value lies in the illustrations done exclusively for it by Willette. - Adolphe Willette was an inseparable part of Montmatre where he was responsible for the decoration of a number of cabarets bistros and the famous Moulin Rouge. A painter first and foremost he exhibited at the Chat Noir having helped to found it. Later he worked with a nuber of newspapers including le rire and Assiette au beurre before establishing le PÜierrot. - Ocassionaly some light foxing. - Very rare with the last two issues. hardcover

Heriot was liberated from Dachau concentration camp on April 2 1945 at age 50 reference available on request.<br /> <br /> Adolphe Willette original lithograph illustrated birth announcement showing a lovely large picture frame with the upper corner revealing a windmill and crescent moon and an infant at lower right. Signed in the plate at lower right.<br /> <br /> Willette 1857-1926 was a French caricaturist painter lithographer and architect of the Moulin Rouge whose many works in the illustrated press Le Pied de Nez le Courier Francais and Le Rire often appeared under various pseudonyms. He was active during the Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau period and was a member of the Cornet Society a group of artists musicians writers academics and playwrights who gathered at various restaurants around Montmartre. Known for his lithographs posters paintings and illustrations Willette was called the "Pierrot of Montmartre" because of his fascination with this comedia del'arte character. Willette's famous 'Parce Domine' painting with many Pierrot figures first decorated the Montmartre cabaret Le Chat Noir; it is now at the Montmartre Museum. Willette also contributed posters to Masters of the Poster Maitres de l'Affiche.<br /> <br /> Image 8 1/2 x 6" printed on thinner paper applied to thicker board 13 1/2 x 10 3/4" unknown

Chansons satiriques. 1re série a musical score for voice and piano subtitled "Douze lithographies de Willette" was published in Paris in 1895 with music by Paul Hucks and lyrics apparently by A. Sémiane. With only 8 or possibly 10 lithographs this copy would seem to be incomplete apart from the music and lyrics which may or may not have been included.
