In addition to 47 full page illustrations some of which are in colour and printed on handmade paper. Collated complete. An autobiography by the French painter and caricaturist Adolphe Willette. Willette is best known as the architect of the famous Moulin Rouge cabaret. His graphical works made Pierrot the pantomime character a fictional hero of France. With a bookplate to the front paste down and stamp to the front free endpaper from the Royal College of Art in London. In full cloth binding. Externally excellent with light shelf wear to the edges and some fading to the spine. Book stamp to the front paste-down and library stamp to the front free endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Adolphe Willette original lithograph illustrated advertisement showing a topless young cabaret performer carrying a round gift box marked "Bonne Annee" stepping through a large oval frame as a young girl assists. Signed in the plate at lower left.<br /> <br /> Willette 1857-1926 was a French caricaturist painter lithographer and architect of the Moulin Rouge whose many works in the illustrated press Le Pied de Nez le Courier Francais and Le Rire often appeared under various pseudonyms. He was active during the Belle Epoque and Art Nouveau period and was a member of the Cornet Society a group of artists musicians writers academics and playwrights who gathered at various restaurants around Montmartre. Known for his lithographs posters paintings and illustrations Willette was called the "Pierrot of Montmartre" because of his fascination with this comedia del'arte character. Willette's famous 'Parce Domine' painting with many Pierrot figures first decorated the Montmartre cabaret Le Chat Noir; it is now at the Montmartre Museum.
