26490<meta charset="utf-8"><span>Y eut-il, aux différentes époques de l’histoire égyptienne, une frontière occidentale clairement définie d’un point de vue culturel et politique ? Comment les limites ouest du territoire égyptien étaient-elles perçues et vécues par le pouvoir central comme par les populations locales ?</span><br><span>Dans cette optique, les actes du colloque international du Caire des 2-3 décembre 2017 explorent les marges occidentales de l’Égypte selon quatre axes: 1) définition, conception, représentation; 2) occupation, contrôle, administration; 3) économie; 4) populations, réseaux, religion.</span><br><span>Ils permettent d’esquisser le portrait d’une région-clé de l’Égypte de l’Antiquité au Moyen Âge. Une fois passée la phase de fixation territoriale de l’État égyptien, la faible densité de population dans le Delta occidental et l’absence de menace réelle n’ont guère incité à définir et défendre une véritable limite occidentale. L’arrivée de nouveaux groupes de populations libyennes aux portes de l’Égypte à l’époque ramesside représente un tournant. L’émergence de la dynastie saïte place la région dans une dynamique nouvelle, celle d’une frontière avec le monde grec et d’un front pionnier, qui préfigure la mise en valeur de ces territoires sous les Ptolémées.</span><br><span>À l’époque impériale, l’Égypte est englobée dans un empire qui s’étend largement plus à l’ouest et dont le centre de décision est extérieur, ce qui modifie le statut des marges ouest. Les incursions nomades dans la Grande Oasis à la fin de la période montrent cependant que la question de la frontière demeure un enjeu.
