This the first issue of the American edition of this French publication has a cover specially designed by Matisse and a series of original color lithographs illustrating the four elements by Fernand Leger Joan Miro Rattner and Bores. There are heliogravure illustrations of photographs by Man Ray Brassai Louis Guichard and others. Also among much else a double-spread photograph of Picasso's "Guernica" taken by Dora Maar which had only recently been exhibited at the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris Exhibition of 1937 an article by Andre Gide "A few Reflections on the Disappearance of the Subject in Painting and Sculpture" and previously unpublished letters and drawings from Cezanne to Emile Zola. All texts are in English translated mostly by Robert Sage. A very bright clean copy with the subscription order form housed in the bright paper-covered box with the illustration by Matisse reproduced on the lid.
