The fascinating world of product design that emerged between the 1960s and 1980s symbolized the birth of a new age and human behavior. From coffee grinders to fondue sets to hairdryers, each home appliance was intended to help in the daily household routines-but they were also masterpieces of style. Based on Jaro Gielens's collection, one of the largest in the world, Soft Electronics explores a nostalgic and unique set of products from a very distinct time for design. Each object possesses a sense of longevity, quality, and innovation-one that has been hard to match since manufacturing was moved overseas and planned obsolescence redefined our relationship with electronic goods. Soft Electronics pays homage to an iconic era of design.

The French designer turned his playful creations into a serious business, winning admirers who have ranged from Middle Eastern royalty to Kanye West and Jennifer Aniston. Illustrated with works offered at Christie's In 1947, Jean Royère (1902-1981) designed a sofa that embodied both his own emerging style and the joie de vivre of the post-war period ? an elegantly rounded beast in soft white velvet that came to be known as the Ours polaire (Polar Bear). The sofa and the archairs that went with it have since become collector's items: in 2017, a cream sofa sold at Christie's for 439,500; a pair of pale-gold armchairs (below) for almost double that.

Self-taught Frisian furniture designer Luitzen Zandbergen creates a range of interior objects and lighting designs inspired by the art and graphics found on wooden fruit crates, and even uses material from the crates in his designs. The colourful illustrations are incorporated in things as diverse as room screens, boxes, drawers, cabinets, and wall panels. Published on the occasion of a retrospective exhibition of Zandbergen?s work, this book gives an overview of 40 years of idiosyncratic production and reuse through images, curious furnishings, and a profusion of small boxes. With contributions by Hans Masselink and others, the volume comes in its own wooden slipcase.
Hardcover, 392 pages, English, 280 x 225 mm, cover not in good condition, however the book itself is, illustrations in colour and b/w, . ISBN 9781851490905. For the past thirty years this book has, in its various editions, outsold all others on British antique furniture simply because it is unique in explaining what to look for when assessing the value of individual pieces. In this, the fourth edition, additional colour plates have been added to illustrate the huge financial importance of patination and colour -- something which has never before been explained and illustrated but which has become increasingly important in recent years. This classic guide consists of some 1,200 photographs of furniture found in shops and auction rooms throughout the country with the author's down-to-earth comments on important features which affect individual prices. The reader will come to understand the rules and prejudices which apply while the eye will become aware of gradations of quality. He will come instinctively to assess the workmanship and how all this affects the final price tag. This is, above all, a reference book for the practising collector and dealer, a work from which the memory may be refreshed and points checked. Each item is clearly referenced. This enables the annual price revision list to be compiled with a ready cross-reference. The list is available in January/February each year on a private subscription basis and details are contained within the book. This new edition contains both Sterling and US Dollar prices.
Book is in excellent condition with tiny chips to the bottom of the spine as the only flaw; otherwise as new. Binding is solid and square, covers have sharp corners, exterior shows no blemishes, text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. Dust jacket shows the slightest signs of shelf wear only, no tears, wrapped in protective cover. 256 pages with full page, full color photo layout on the R. page with a description of this particular element of Gaudi's work on the L. page. The story of the illustrated book from the earliest printed books to the present day, told through the collections of the V&A's National Art Library. Throughout history, images have been used to reflect the meaning of words and to enhance our understanding of texts. With the invention of mechanized printing in Germany in the 15th century, illustrated books were no longer the preserve of the elite and became a source of knowledge, instruction and pleasure for a wider audience. Traditional accounts of the illustrated book survey its history in terms of technological advances, from illumination to hand-drawn illustrations and photography. This study offers a new approach, grouping books by subject - from natural history and travel to art, architecture and fashion. Gathered here are some of the most influential and compelling examples of the illustrated book, all chosen from the collections of the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Each chapter starts with a general introduction to the subject, followed by key examples accompanied by narrative captions. The commentaries range beyond the illustrations to consider the whole book, the design, typeface, binding, inks and papers. Many of the books are not on display to the public and have been specially photographed for this volume. Most examples have been chosen for their significance, being innovative and beautiful. But humble books, often overlooked in histories, have also been selected, when particularly effective in their field, or simply memorable. From beautiful printed Psalters and Books of Hours, to striking natural history books such as Audubon's Birds of America, La Fontaine's Fables illustrated by Marc Chagall, Serlio's treatise on architecture and Owen Jones's Grammar of Ornament, this book gives a fascinating overview of some of the finest illustrated books ever created. In the face of recent pronouncements about the death of the printed book, this volume demonstrates the enduring appeal of the illustrated book.
