Project Rio Blanco was an underground nuclear test that took place on May 17 1973 in Rio Blanco County Colorado approximately 36 miles 58 km northwest of Rifle. Three 33-kiloton nuclear devices were detonated nearly simultaneously in a single emplacement well at depths of 5838 6230 and 6689 feet 1779 1899 and 2039 m below ground level. The tests were conducted in fine-grain low-permeability sandstone lenses at the base of the Fort Union Formation and the upper portion of the Mesaverde Formation. This was the third and final natural-gas-reservoir stimulation test in the Plowshare program which was designed to develop peaceful uses for nuclear energy. The two previous tests were Project Gasbuggy in New Mexico and Project Rulison in Colorado. The United States Atomic Energy Commission conducted the test in partnership with CER Geonuclear Corporation and Continental Oil Company. A placard erected in 1976 now marks the site where the test was conducted. The site is accessible via a dirt road Rio Blanco County Route 29. Peaceful nuclear explosions PNEs are nuclear explosions conducted for non-military purposes. Proposed uses include excavation for the building of canals and harbors electrical generation the use of nuclear explosions to drive spacecraft and as a form of wide-area fraking. PNEs were an area of some research from the late 1950s into the 1980s primarily in the United States and Soviet Union. In the U.S. a series of tests were carried out under Project Plowshare. Some of the ideas considered included blasting a new Panama Canal the use of underground explosions to create electricity and a variety of geological studies. The largest of the excavation tests was carried out in the Sedan nuclear test in 1962 which released large amounts of radioactive gas into the air. By the late 1960s public opposition to Plowshare was increasing and a 1970s study of the economics of the concepts suggested they had no practical use. Plowshare saw decreasing interest from the 1960s and was officially canceled in 1977. The Soviet program started a few years after the U.S. efforts and explored many of the same concepts under their Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy program. The program was more extensive eventually conducting 239 nuclear explosions. Some of these tests also released radioactivity including a significant release of plutonium into the groundwater and the polluting of an area near the Volga River. A major part of the program in the 1970s and 80s was the use of very small bombs to produce shock waves as a seismic measuring tool and as part of these experiments two bombs were successfully used to seal blown-out oil wells. The program officially ended in 1988. As part of ongoing arms control efforts both programs came to be controlled by a variety of agreements. Most notable among these is the 1976 Treaty on Underground Nuclear Explosions for Peaceful Purposes PNE Treaty. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty of 1996 prohibits all nuclear explosions regardless of whether they are for peaceful purposes or not. Circa 1930. 37 black and white photographs presented in an accordion album 26.5 x 19cm 20pp 2 loose black and white photographs 18.2 x 25.5cm 14.7 x 10.2cm some wear and a few photographs missing but the photographs are generally in good to very good condition. This family photograph album brings out various aspects of a military personnel in Japan. It starts with a letter written by a serviceman who was stationed in China to most likely the owner of this album Kusaka Tadao 日下忠夫 who lived in Wakayama Prefecture. The letter was written in pencil and is difficult to decipher. The pages of one side of the album are filled with the photographs of a wedding: bride and bridegroom attendees and the wedding venue. Probably the most interesting photographs are the four showing the interior of what appears to be the wedding location. The exterior photograph of the well-to-do house is accompanied by another showing beautiful Japanese garden. Following the wedding photographs are other family photographs which were taken at celebratory occasions such as starting military service or during the holidays and visits to temples and shrines. One group photograph was taken at Futamigaura near Ise Shrine. A primary school graduation photograph was taken to mark the graduation at Kane Ordinary Primary School 河根尋常小学校 in Ito County in Wakayama Prefecture near Koyasan. The photograph was taken by M. Okada Photographic Studio. It was a small class with a dozen pupils or so with teaching staff. A young woman who is sitting on the first row lower left has a distinctive hair style and it might indicate that the photograph was taken around the beginning of the 20th century. The owner's name Imoto Masako appears on reverse. A loose formal photographic portrait features a young non-commissioned officer of the Japanese Imperial Navy in his uniform and hat. The emblem shows of his military rank. . unknown

This superb early 20th-century work on the "complete Iraq" was also published in Arabic and English separately. All published. The best reference in English of modern Iraq prepared by the Ministry of Interior in 1936 including history architecture archaeology military history economy health services jails oil companies engineering press and printing houses ports navigation army government Iraqi flag and social structure of the country in the 1930s containing minorities and ethnic groups with statistics and history. This historically significant work gives invaluable insight into the social historical and economical structure of modern Iraq. The book in almanac form which is opening with a preface contains the full page plates of His Majesty King Ghazi I views of Qasr al-Zehoor residential Palace of H.M. the King H.R.M. Amir Faisal Crown Prince of Iraq and His Late Majesty King Faisal I Creator of Modern Iraq photo-engraved in Cairo and Iraq with special permissions of the Court. Some tables of conversion of years A.H. into years A.D. of Sunrise and Sunsets in 1936 temperatures and eclipses and official holidays with the general calendar of 1936. This important calendar includes the special and historical days like All Saint's Day Occupation of Mosul British Forces Armistice Day Jewish Christian and Islamic feasts etc. next to a general chromo-lithographed map of Iraq. The work gives general information about Iraqi geography and administrative divisions. The next chapter gives a detailed historical account of Iraq to the present day. The government services like medicine transportation courts cabinet army sports etc. are introduced in detail. As the most important two chapters of the work including a richly illustrated account of the ethnic groups inhabitants minorities and religious demography and 'liwas' of the country give invaluable resources to the Iraqi social structure. An interesting additional notice by the new government of the period indicates "When the Iraq Directory for 1936 was still in the press a law was enacted prohibiting the use of titles such as Beg Pasha etc. in Iraq". This gives an insight into the relations of Iraq with the Republic of Turkey in the 1930s. The last chapter titled "the commercial section" contains almost all national and international Iraqi and some European firms in the 1930s trade such as shipping and transportation firms exporters merchants cinemas hotels publishers and manufacturing companies in various sectors is unsurpassed trade reference for the early 20th century Middle Eastern trade especially after the nationalism of Iraqi oil created the Iraq National Oil Company by negotiations took six years and ended with the July 1928 Red Line Agreement with the US and Britain.
