1002574France: no publisher no date early twentieth century. Striking hand-colored sheet of six "images d'Épinal." Inexpensive broadsides like these were hugely popular in France in the nineteenth century: naïve woodcuts brightly colored featuring images of Catholic saints Napoleonic battles and storybook characters. By the turn of the twentieth century lithography had emerged as the primary printing process and the range of subjects had greatly expanded but there was still a market for images printed in the old style a graphic tradition that influenced modernists from Henri Rousseau to Alfred Jarry. This group of six separate images printed from blocks on a sheet of Ingres d'Arches paper may be a publisher's proof. The military and religious subjects include uniformed soldiers on horseback the Madonna and child and Saint Hubert's encounter with Christ in the form of a stag. A bright fine example. Single sheet of six woodblock prints printed recto only and colored en pochoir measuring 14.75 x 19 inches. no publisher unknown books

1927004758Detroit: Fisher Body Corporation Fleetwood Body Corporation General Motors 1927. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. An extraordinarily beautiful sales catalogue organized around vivid colors as the title suggests. Folio 33 by 25 cm. xxx 30 2 pp. plus wraps. All the cars have in fact two colors both of which are suggested by the color designation and each color and car receives a luxuriant two-page spread with three color illustrations: one for the inspiration for the particular color one of the car interior and one for the outer body. Accompanying the illustrations are fluid intoxicating descriptions that conjure up the imagery the sensate experience the fantasy with only passing mentions of some of the design specifics. The cars include Cabriolets a Roadster a Phaeton Imperials a Brougham a Town Sedan and a Convertible Coupe. One can see designs that both reach back to the fine coaches of a quickly receding era and the more comfortable sleeker cars to come. The brochure was released in conjunction with a road show showcase of the vehicles staged at fine hotels in New York Chicago Los Angeles and San Francisco the Commodore the Drake the Biltmore and the Palace respectively. Honors include: U.S. delegate to the World Forum on Women Brussels 1962; American Association of University Women Woman of the year 1966; first distinguished professor at the Brigham Young University 1967 and many more. information from the BYU site - their special collections hold a few Cutler items; item not dated and circa 1958; made in one continuous fold each panel approx. 12" x 14 1/2" size with a continuous length of over 12 feet; created on one side only of the panels; we assume that Dr. Cutler collected the work of Mrs. Sudirman in an effort to present it to other English-speakers; the colors rich and vivid on each panel as is the final design; with some of the panels bearing their content of raised wax as appropriate to that stage of the process; each panel on 'manila' cardstock; some edgewear and soiling closed tear to back panel of covers; batiks in very good condition; an impressive visual statement of the technique and the process of this ancient art form. 1955137035Los Angeles: Joseph Cossman 1955. Original merchandising poster for a non-existent film circa 1955 created by entrepreneur Joseph Cossman for no other purpose than to sell the poster via mail order to individuals who wished to live in a world where they co-starred with Jayne Mansfield as their romantic female lead. In this case the lucky man was Ernie Cisney.

The poster was printed first as a four-color poster lacking the name of the co-star below Jayne Mansfield's and when the orders came rolling in the purchasing party's name would be added. Apart from the names of Cossman apparently the inventor of "Cosmo-Color" and Mansfield-along with a wild appropriation of the Fawcett Gold Medal logo at the top right corner-none of the names on the poster represent real persons in the film industry.

Cossman was a mail-order magnate responsible for the invention and marketing of such memorable 1950s products as the Spud Gun and the Ant Farm marketed entirely through comic books newspapers and magazines. The poster here represents an attempt on Cossman's part to sell posters as inventions rather than an advertisement of an actual film. Though it no doubt never crossed Crossman's mind a fascinating early example of meta-advertising.

Research has produced two other examples of the poster images only with the same design but different fictional names this being the only actual example of the poster we have handled or seen.

17.5 x 28 inches. Folded with a few pinholes at the corners a couple of short separations at the folds and a tiny chip at one corner. Very Good overall. Joseph Cossman unknown books

197143042New York: Yippy 1971. First Edition. Original machine lithographed poster in colors 72cm x 58cm ca 28-1/2" x 22-1/2". A few minor edge-creases but a bright unfaded unworn example Near Fine A-. Unbacked. Rather early poster commission by the artist and art-world provocateur Robert Cenedella. Cenedella is perhaps best known for his 2018 lawsuit against five American art museums in which he alleges that museums and private gallerists have been co-conspirators in denying certain artists -- including himself -- mainstream success. The current design delightfully unironic reproduces the insignia of the United Nations in day-glo colors with psychedelic typography at lower 1/3 of image. Apparently uncommon; we find no catalogued examples in OCLC; not in the on-line catalog of the OAC. Yippy unknown books
