1940WRCAM49639New York 1940. Forty-two original works from approximately 9 x 7 1/4 inches to 14 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. Most on paper and mounted to cardboard backing some executed on art board some matted. Minor dust-soiling to some several examples have pencil drawings of room layouts or floor plans on the verso Hofstatter stamps on verso of two a few examples detached from mount. Overall clean and in excellent condition retaining vibrant coloring. A stellar group of thirty-nine original watercolors and three original pencil drawings depicting early 20th-century furniture designs largely in the French Provincial style. The artwork was executed by New York furniture designer and interior decorator Theodore Hofstatter or artists working for his firm. The group includes wonderful depictions of mirrors beds window drapes chairs desks bureaus tables and stands. Additionally there are eleven works showing the interior design of various room settings. <br> <br> Theodore Hofstatter succeeded his father in their New York City business of furniture design and construction naming the firm Hofstatter's Sons when his brother Adolph joined him in the concern in the early 1870s. The Hofstatter family concentrated their efforts on building quality furniture at wholesale prices. In 1885 Theodore Hofstatter founded a branch of the business to focus on interior decorating opening a separate location on Broadway near Twelfth Street. Eventually the business would move to at least two different addresses on Fifth Avenue evidenced by Hofstatter labels affixed to the verso of several of the watercolors here a few of these labels are also marked "Special Design" by Hofstatter. According to THE NATIONAL CYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY 1894 Theodore's design business "kept abreast ever since its opening with the current of fashionable taste in illustrating in the styles reproduced all those characteristics with which the names inseparably connected with the history of the three Louis are essentially a part. Berain Lebrun Watteau Andre Charles Boule have now a historical significance; Cailleri Gouthiere Reisener Fragonard Greuze Boucher Martin and the rest awaken a whole train of associations. It is through their influence and such as theirs that Theodore Hofstatter's designs possess the material to produce only those effects that can be truthfully termed good style." Hofstatter restricted his decorating contracts largely to commercial interests furnishing the City Club the Downtown Club the Arkwright Club and nine floors of the Hotel Savoy. He also cultivated a small group of private clients one of whom was Cornelius Dresselhuys Dutch consul to Great Britain. Two of Dresselhuys's rooms the Entrance Hall and Vestibule at 9 Kensington Palace Gardens in London are featured here in lovely full watercolors. <br> <br> A fascinating group of artwork featuring furniture and interiors from a prominent New York City furniture maker and interior designer. Collection includes 65 original photographs of the Knoll workshop and designs with contact prints dated 7/66 and negatives; several production sheets with layout and markup; notes and ephemera; a 1966 Knoll catalog with color and black-and-white photography and price list; and one complete 17-page typescript article draft by Olga Gueft dated 3/27/67. About a quarter of the photographs have numbers or notes on the back identifying the subject or photographer either Gueft herself or as "Not Gueft Photo." Most are approx. 10'' by 7'' with a few others in smaller sizes. A few photographs thumbed at corners; otherwise very good or better. All housed in large archival box. <br/><br/>Production archive of contact prints original photographs page mock-ups ephemera typescript and other primary materials from INTERIORS MAGAZINE editor Olga Gueft 1915-2015. Gueft a highly influential figure in the history of 20th century design joined INTERIORS as managing editor in 1945 and ascended to editor in 1953 remaining in that position through 1974. Her eye for promising designers led her to commission early cover artwork from Andy Warhol and under her guidance the magazine showcased the work of Florence Knoll Vladimir Kagan and Edward Wormley among many others. Tucked inside a 1966 Knoll Leisure Collection catalog is a 17-page typescript article on the history and contemporary design direction of the Knoll company titled NEW HANDS FOR THE TORCH and most likely intended for publication i INTERIORS. Gueft always an editor with strong opinions begins by reviewing the unspeakable ugliness of the early 1940s — "Most disgusting of all were the chairs" — as a reminder to the reader of what horrors preceded the midcentury modern aesthetic and what a great and gracious service Hans and Florence Knoll did for America and for the world. The article then details the several periods of Knoll through Hans's death and Florence Knoll's departure in 1965 concluding with an overview of the then-current design and development team. The remainder of the archive consists of 65 photographs with contact sheets negatives and other notes and ephemera all associated with Knoll. A memo from Gueft to "Christine" specifies that none of her photos may be used without credit or without payment outside of "a Knoll or Knoll International in-company house organ or newsletter." A few of the photographs thus have "Not Gueft Photo / Can Be Used" scrawled on the back. The East Greenville Pennsylvania workshop described in the article is the setting and subject of the majority of the photographs many of which include identified or identifiable designers and other figures at Knoll — Warren Platner Don Albinson Richard Schultz Don Pettitt William Stephens — and their work both in progress and in finished form. The remarkable series of photographs shows Knoll workers assembling furniture some in extreme close-up or documenting technical details. Another group focuses specifically on the Platner chair both in the process of assembly and finished. Gueft cites Platner's wire furniture Richard Schultz's "elegant aluminum frames" Albinson's "remarkably strong remarkably elegant" stacking chair all pictured in photographs as exemplars of "the continuity of the Knoll ideal . maintained without a break." Oblong folio 390 x 270 mm bound in publisher's silk over boards in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Unsodo 1934. A spectacular series of designs with the superb colour woodblock plates with each volume devoted to a different motif. Volume 1 is Ryu no maki the dragon. Volume 2 is Hoo no maki the phoenix and Volume 3 is Shishi no maki the lion. Both the full colour plates and the monochrome plates facing them are masterpieces of the woodblock maker's art. Unsodo is the name of a large Japanese publishing company with branches in both Tokyo and Kyoto. Founded in 1891 this company is still in existence today. From the 1890s through the 1930s the Unsodo publishing house was involved in printing high quality pattern books for various crafts including textiles and lacquer. 1908884571908. DESIGN Sugiura HISUI designer. MITSUKOSHI; MITSUKOSHI TIMES; ÔSAKA MITSUKOSHI Tôkyô & Ôsaka 1908-1923. Western-style magazines 24.9 x 18.4 cm decorated wrappers. Lovely covers most by Sugiura Hisui 1876-1965 or designed under his supervision. Hisui is the most important figure in the development of Japanese commercial art in the 20th century the progenitor of "Taishô Chic" and a force to be reckoned with as a practical designer at Mitsukoshi and an educator at the Japan School of Art the Imperial School of Fine Art and the Tama Imperial School of Art which he co-founded. He even spent two years in Europe in the early 20s researching design. He created many portfolios of design examples for professionals wrote treatises on the principles of design and was a tireless creator of posters and magazine covers. He began work at Mitsukoshi in 1908 as a design consultant in charge of cover art for the house organ MITSUKOSHI TIMES. When MITSUKOSHI magazine began in 1912 he had already been promoted to head of design for the company a year earlier and stayed in that position for decades. His artwork graced the covers of many magazines over the years but it was his work for MITSUKOSHI and MITSUKOSHI TIMES and ÔSAKA MITSUKOSHI that began his design career. We are offering here a group of issues of those magazines most with his brilliant cover art. The magazines as a form of trade catalog and guide to fashion for the well-heeled clientele of Mitsukoshi department store were intrinsically ephemeral. They are hefty magazines a vade mecum for the bon ton with pictures of summer frocks kimono fabrics morning coats shoes - with instructions on how they should be cleaned stored worn. With pictures and prices and order sheets. Useful and used then thrown away they are seldom found today. A gathering of this size is quite unusual especially as it begins with issues of MITSUKOSHI TIMES from 1908 - the year that Hisui took over design reponsibilities for the house organ. A 4 page fascicle of preliminaries and a table of contents. With the chitsu design the cover design 3 preliminary page designs and 61 designs on the 50 content fascicles. The designs are primarily in color woodcut printed on both paper and occasionally cloth. A beautiful production here in almost perfect condition. Fujii Tatsukichi 1881-1964 was one of the most important reformers of the traditional arts in Japan. His creativity touched nearly every area: lacquer pottery papermaking dyeing - his influence was enormous. This scarce and lovely portfolio of his original designs helps to illustrate why he was so important. Contains an undated Happôdô colophon and 50 design prints 49 in color and one as a textual calligraphic introduction to the work A source indicates the designs were done by Yamaoka Chinpei. The prints are extraordinarily lavish with sprinkled metal flakes overprinting metallic inks etc. A wonderful tribute to the Neo-Rimpa and Deco sensibilities of the age. As Sekka's last work it crowns his remarkable career with a lovely evocation of Koetsu's Saga-bon. For more on this important work see Hillier's description on p.976 of the second volume of his ART OF THE JAPANESE BOOK. The condition is a bit better than average with relatively little of the offsetting from the prints to the poems that is usual in this book. Slight foxing and slight edgewear. The printing is very good the colors lovely. It is a very good copy overall. Kyoto Unsodo Meiji 43 1910 An orihon in 3 volumes 27 X 19 cm with woodblock printed covers all in a later fitted clasped cloth chitsu case. Unsodo outdid itself in this early design effort. Dozens of double page horizontal designs which become large prints the paper size being 37.5 x 27 cm as well as circular and fan-shaped and single page designs too. Most in the neo-Rimpa style which Unsodo artists pioneered at the beginning of the last century - bold and lovely. A bit of browning and fading the covers show some wear but overall very good condition a very nice impression of this important set. Complete. Tokyo: Mitsukoshi Gofukuten Meiji 45 1912. 29 x 23.5 cm. decorated boards and cloth in decorated dustwrapper and original tied decorated portfolio covers. A lovely package designed and illustrated by Hisui 1876-1965 the head designer for Mitsukoshi for the first half of the 20th century and one of the most important commercial designers of his day. Profusely illustrated throughout in color lithographs and relief prints. The text was written by Iwaya Sazanami this wonderful book was created for the new mothers of the burgeoning middle class who were buying their baby clothes and furnishings at Mitsukoshi. It was meant as a child's diary of development. from birth to the age of seven. Originally published in 1909 this second printing is nearly perfect there is some spotting to the tied outer covers and original and as such very scarce and desirable. General wear. Overall sound. Very good. <br/><br/>Draft production binder used in creation and revision of a 1929 catalogue of electric lighting fixtures and accessories belonging to Lauritz W. Andersen industrial designer and owner of The Waterbury Metal Wares Co. Andersen was a prominent inventor and designer of electrical socketry in the early 20th century; his career can be traced through patent office records where over 60 items bear his name. He was with the firm of Plume and Atwood for approximately 25 years leaving in 1915 to form Waterbury. The firm specialized in fixtures and other components for lamps and lighting — including earlier methods candles lanterns. Sconces candelabras floor and desk lamps as well as more specialized piano drafting much in evidence. The clear professional photographs as well as sketches and notes within the binder provide a thorough glimpse into the early industrial design and marketing of electrical lighting. Martin Pitts and Paul Delrue with prospectus. Paul Delrue b. 1944 bound his first book at the age of fifteen in 1959 and knew he had discovered his calling. He became an apprentice at the University College London from 1961-64 and worked there as a binder until 1971. He set up his own bindery in 1971 and in 1981 was elected a Fellow of the Society of Bookbinders having founded and served as chairman of the Chester and North Wales branch in 1979. Paul has earned numerous awards and honours including the Silver medal and three other awards in 1991 in The Bookbinding Competition. He was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in the same year; the following year he was awarded two Bronze medals in the prestigious Prix Paul Bonet. <br/><br/>Paul invented the lacunose style of binding which is masterfully shown in this work although he uses other methods as well. His work is highly prized and springs from within him; as he writes on his website "A book and its binding are inextricably linked - the one complements the other in a way which creates something more than just a book with an attractive cover. My design bindings draw on what a book says to me and how it inspires me emotionally." <br/><br/>The lovely Delrue binding perfectly complements the story by The Hon. Roden Noel 1834-1894. Album containing unmounted watercolor and gouache pencil and color printed studies of individual pieces of furniture and interior design ensembles probably created as maquettes for advertising purposes. Includes 17 in pencil ranging in size from 5.5-by-9 inches to 11-by-17 inches; and 32 in color most about 11-by-15 inches with 3 large pieces 18-by-24 inches folded once down the middle. Total of 48 pieces some a little rubbed or chipped along the edges; a few of the pencil sketches foxed; but the whole is overall nice and bright suitable for display. Remarkably detailed the polished wood shines! and accomplished artwork shows lavish nigh on palatial bedrooms and dining rooms -- with ornate beds bookcases chairs tables bureaus dressers and more prominently on display. 13 images in pencil or in color focus on specific pieces of furniture sometimes many per page taking them out of their context rooms and allowing a detailed look at the piece itself. The designs seem primarily focused on classical and neoclassical styles but Muebles Rodriguez is known for carrying modern colonial Provencal and avant garde pieces as well -- some of that influence is apparent here. Vintage satin banner with hand-sewn lettering by an unknown artist made after Paul Krassner and John Francis Putnam's 1963 poster. <br/><br/>Krassner created the "Fuck Communism" poster for sale through his satirical underground magazine The Realist with typography by longtime Mad magazine art director Putnam. In addition to publishing The Realist from 1958 to 2001 Krassner was a founder of the radical activist group the Youth International Party The Yippies and an early member of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters. <br/><br/>In the words of occasional Realist contributor Kurt Vonnegut "At the beginning of the 1960s FUCK was believed to be so full of bad magic as to be unprintable. . By having FUCK and COMMUNISM fight it out in a single sentence Krassner wasn't merely being funny as heck. 19651002159Rome: Faro Disegni 1965. Beautiful archive of midcentury porcelain designs each an original hand-colored work of art spanning a wide variety of botanical geometric and figural styles. Some feature realistic portraits of flowers and birds while others are much more stylized: traditional folk motifs linear Art Nouveau florals bright mod blossoms. This is a working archive: many of the images are annotated and corrected in pencil and themes like the firebird are developed over multiple sheets. Of the 168 designs that survive eight are unnumbered and the others are numbered as follows: 1-47 49-67 69-138 140-144 146-155 157-165. Roman firm Faro Disegni is best known for their textile designs; this archive testifies to their participation in other aspects of the decorative arts. A remarkable survival. Collection of 168 original hand-colored designs for porcelain plates each on a separate sheet of various sizes: a group of 111 designs executed in pencil ink and watercolor on heavy paper most measuring 14.5 x 13 inches and a smaller group of 57 sketches executed primarily in pencil and crayon on onionskin measuring less than 12 inches square. This "Practical Design" monthly features the work of Oda Kazuma 1882-1956 in this its first issue. This issue features articles on the use of electric lights at night for advertising with a note at the end on some recent advertising posters that have appeared. Obviously a periodical by professionals for professionals in the design and advertising world. Not a world one usually thinks of Oda Kazuma belonging to but here he turns his talents at lithographic printmaking to more practical ends with sevarl examples of advertising designs and commercial art. Unusually well-preserved copy of this landmark of Soviet book design featuring copious examples of the revolutionary photomontage work of Rodchenko and Stepanova. The two extremely fragile inserted design elements - a die-cut folded plate bearing Lenin's portrait on a movie screen and a clear celluloid sheet with the printed silhouette of Stalin are rarely found intact if at all; in this copy both are present and complete in excellent condition.
