197521851Brooklyn/Toronto: John Dowd/Art Metropole 1975. First Edition. Wraps. Fine. 4to. Saddle-stapled wraps. Fine condition. Very sharp and clean. 90pp. <br/><br/>Fourth issue of five. Baylin's magazine was conceived as "fanzine" to John Dowd a "handsome New York leatherman with a physique reminiscent of a 'Tom of Finland' character" who participated in the mag's production and publication QUEER ZINES p. 76. In this issue the zine moved toward an almost entirely image-based style comprised of cartoons ad iconography and photos of male pornstars and celebrities including Cher Divine and Thelonious Monk. The title page states: "In these pages we have attempted to crystallize all the most dynamic details of our day to day experience. To further refine this cosmos we have creased five sections into which are channelled the best of our interests." A more illuminating sentence follows at the bottom of the page: "In the thick of the all to familiar yet loveable KITSCH which affects a maudlin world it is the nature of our own affliction to expose the fantasies which move us and in doing so somehow touch YOUR lifestyle in the most literal way we know." OCLC locates just five copies. John Dowd/Art Metropole paperback books

18171002752London: Rudolph Ackermann 1817. Delightful example of the "line and dot" caricature craze of the Regency period. Although the art of the stick figure dates back to prehistoric times English caricaturist George Moutard Woodward is generally credited with inspiring the modern "pinmen" genre with his "Multum in Parvo or Lilliputian Sketches" early in the nineteenth century. Soon publishers across London were turning out prints of comically expressive pinmen hunting riding dueling flirting and acting Shakespeare. In February 1817 Ackermann's Repository of Arts published a satirical poem "Dottator et Lineator Loquitur" from the perspective of an exultant caricaturist: "I know that I can do much more / Than artists ever did before; / With but a DOT and eke a LINE / In ev'ry shape and act I'll shine." The poem was illustrated with a series of pinmen performing scenes from a ball: "Asking to Dance" "Cross Hands" "Hornpipe" and so on. This engraving printed on heavy paper and trimmed within the plate mark features the same dancers depicted in the pages of Ackermann's. A very good caricature print. Engraved caricature print measuring 3.75 x 8.25 inches imprint trimmed. Occasional stray spot. [Rudolph Ackermann] unknown books

197625929n.p.: Warner Bros. Publications Inc. Very Good. c.1976. First Edition. Softcover. both volumes modestly edge-worn with light age-toning to edge of text block cheap paper; Volume I had small check-marks next to nine titles in the contents list; Volume II has a couple of small scrape marks on the front cover and a short diagonal crease at the top right corner of the front cover. An incredible compilation of music lyrics and guitar chords for about 200 songs selected to highlight "the major trends in the Rock movement from its beginnings in the mid fifties to the current progressive sound. Volume I traces early Rock 'n' Roll from the songs of Elvis Presley and Little Richard through the Folk Rock movement of Bob Dylan and Gordon Lightfoot up to the emergence of the Beatles in the late sixties as the dominant force in Rock music. Volume II spans the period from the Beatles trend-setting 'Sgt. Pepper' album into the Hard Rock of the Led Zeppelin heavy metal sound and through the rapid evolution of Soft Folk Jazz and Country Rock of the seventies to the current Disco beat." Although there's a copyright disclaimer about the "many songs we could not use" it definitely includes a lot of milestones including no fewer than 32 Beatles tunes. The selections in Volume I are divided into three sections: Early Rock n' Roll Elvis Little Richard Sam Cooke Bill Haley etc.; Folk Rock - the 60's Bob Dyan Peter Paul & Mary Joni Mitchell etc.; and Rock n' Roll 1960's dominated by The Beatles and The Bee Gees. Volume II contains: Rock - 60's/70's more Beatles & Bee Gees also The Who The Rolling Stone Elton John and others; Soft & Folk Rock - 1970's Neil Young Jackson Browne Linda Ronstadt Cat Stevens etc.; Hard Rock Deep Purple Led Zeppelin Alice Cooper; Country Rock the Allman Brothers the Eagles; Progressive & Jazz Rock Joni Mitchell Yes; and last AND least Disco Rock the Staples Singers the Average White Band and the return of the Bee Gees!. I've cited the big names of course but there are plenty of lesser lights here too and even a few mysteries does "Tom Cat" by Tom Scott & the L.A. Express ring a bell with anybody.
