Lowenfels 1897-1976 was a key figure in the Paris avant-garde during the 1930s where he was a close friend of Henry Miller and Anais Nin and was in fact the model for the character Jabberwhorl Kronstadt in Miller's Tropic of Cancer . Returning to the US he became a central Communist Party organizer and an editor of the Philadelphia Daily Worker.
