Contains an undated Happôdô colophon and 50 design prints 49 in color and one as a textual calligraphic introduction to the work A source indicates the designs were done by Yamaoka Chinpei. The prints are extraordinarily lavish with sprinkled metal flakes overprinting metallic inks etc. A wonderful tribute to the Neo-Rimpa and Deco sensibilities of the age. Tokyo: Mitsukoshi Gofukuten Meiji 45 1912. 29 x 23.5 cm. decorated boards and cloth in decorated dustwrapper and original tied decorated portfolio covers. A lovely package designed and illustrated by Hisui 1876-1965 the head designer for Mitsukoshi for the first half of the 20th century and one of the most important commercial designers of his day. Profusely illustrated throughout in color lithographs and relief prints. The text was written by Iwaya Sazanami this wonderful book was created for the new mothers of the burgeoning middle class who were buying their baby clothes and furnishings at Mitsukoshi. It was meant as a child's diary of development. from birth to the age of seven. Originally published in 1909 this second printing is nearly perfect there is some spotting to the tied outer covers and original and as such very scarce and desirable. See pp. 70-71 for more on this book in the Hisui special issue of the magazine HANGA GEIJUTSU #140 Summer 2008. Near fine. unknown books

Pages tend to begin to separate from the binding from the weight and large dimension of the pages. Bright unclipped dustwrapper has light fade to red spine color but less than typically seen. First printing of the Toronto imprint duodecimo size 412 pp. The designs of Margaret Armstrong 1867-1944 utilising the Art Nouveau style and floral patterns were a sensation in the publishing business; Armstrong created over 270 book designs often for the works of well-known authors such as Charles Dickens Robert Louis Stevenson and George Washington Cable. In addition to designing books Armstrong wrote books as well including a comprehensive guide to wildflowers in the American West which she also illustrated.<br/><br/>This novel by George Washington Cable 1844-1925 tells of a romance set in New Orleans during the American Civil War; Cable considered the "first modern southern writer" used his fiction to highlight the injustices of racism in the South and he is considered a precursor to William Faulkner. This volume is a scarce Toronto imprint and has a vintage bookseller's ticket on the rear paste-down endpaper from a book shop in Vancouver B. Oblong folio 390 x 270 mm bound in publisher's silk over boards in a new chitsu case. Kyoto: Unsodo 1934. A spectacular series of designs with the superb colour woodblock plates with each volume devoted to a different motif. Volume 1 is Ryu no maki the dragon. Volume 2 is Hoo no maki the phoenix and Volume 3 is Shishi no maki the lion. Both the full colour plates and the monochrome plates facing them are masterpieces of the woodblock maker's art. Unsodo is the name of a large Japanese publishing company with branches in both Tokyo and Kyoto. Founded in 1891 this company is still in existence today. From the 1890s through the 1930s the Unsodo publishing house was involved in printing high quality pattern books for various crafts including textiles and lacquer. Some wear to the boards but otherwise a fine set. Rare. hardcover books
1929144757New York: Henry Miller's Theatre 1929. Original flyer for the 1929 play "Journey's End" which premiered at Henry Miller's Theatre on Broadway on March 22 1929 and closed on May 17 1930 for a total of 485 performances. <br/><br/>The first US production of the play after its smash hit at at the Apollo Theatre in London which starred a young Laurence Olivier and was directed by then-unknown director James Whale. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest plays ever written about World War I following the plight of a British Army infantry company in 1918. <br/><br/>Whale accompanied the play to America for the production advertised here which by late 1929 was being performed by 14 companies in English and 17 in other languages and he would go on to direct the 1930 film adaptation starring Colin Clive David Manners and Ian Maclaren. His film would be the first of numerous adaptations including: "The Other Side" 1931 "Aces High" 1976 and "Journey's End" 2017. <br/><br/>Whale would go on to even greater Hollywood fame later directing "Frankenstein" "The Invisible Man" "The Bride of Frankenstein" and more and was one of the first openly gay directors.<br/><br/>Two-color single leaf folded once 10 x 8 inches.
