2001259<p>This is a three-volume set accompanied by a slipcase that features the title of the set printed on the side. Each volume is bound in matching cloth hardcovers showcasing unique illustrations. The spines of all volumes display the titles in gold gilt which remains vibrant against a black background. All volumes are in excellent near-new condition with only very minor flaws. There is no foxing or significant damage in any of the volumes. However the slipcase which displays the title shows more visible wear and has a splatter that appears to be either paint or white ink. A first edition of this scarce work in the publisher's original decorative paper boards with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Bookplate of Alexander Lord Hesketh to the front paste down. It is possible that Lord Hesketh was interested in the Hesketh Plot which is examined in one of Devlin's essays. A collection of nine essays by Christopher Devlin with the overall theme of life in England during the reign of Elizabeth I and the struggles of the Catholic minority to restore their faith among the people. These essays with an introduction by C. V. Wedgwood cover the Gunpowder Plot Shakespeare's faith as well as that of his character Hamlet and the Hesketh Plot among other historic events and people. In the publisher's original decorative paper boards. Externally lovely and bright. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. The University of Cambridge records a letter written by Templeman to to Lady Emma Nora Barlow née Darwin within their holdings.</p> <p>Edited by Henrietta Emma Litchfield A Century of Family Letters assembles the correspondence of Emma Darwin 1808–1896 and her extended family forming a deeply personal record of domestic life at Down House. Although presented as a memoir of Emma the two-volume set contains a substantial number of Charles Darwin’s letters documenting his habits humor and the intimate exchanges that shaped his intellectual and moral outlook. </p> <p>Issued privately for family and friends the edition was explicitly dedicated to Emma Darwin’s grandchildren.
