An Arabian Nights-style tale originally written by the illustrator's great uncle Harry Wedgwood for his children. Wedgwood was the grandson of the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood and brother-in-law of Charles Darwin. The story was originally published in 'The Family Tutor' in 1852 and was later privately printed in 1887. The story follows a little princess who comes into possession of a magic ring allowing her to communicate with birds. Walter de la Mare greatly admired Raverat's work and the pair later collaborated on his 1942 publication 'Crossings: A Fairy Play' Faber 1942. A lovely copy with these charming illustrations. Disbound. = A noteworthy contribution by Josiah Wedgwood 1730-1795 Potter to Her Majesty founder of the Wedgwood company and a close friend of Erasmus Darwin grandfather of Charles Darwin. He himself was father of Charles Darwins mother Susannah Wedgwood. This study was prompted by Wedgwood's desire to improve methods of producing pottery for which an accurate measurement of high temperatures is essential. In an earlier paper he described his invention the pyrometer and the present work elaborates on this. Published in the Philosophical Transactions volume 76. His hands are grasped together in a plea the text above reads Am I not a man and a brother. Image 28 x 28 cm sheet 141 x 209 cm. Possibly a partial plate extracted from a copy of The Poetical Works of Erasmus Darwin 1806 which has a composite plate of this image beneath a Webber vignette related to Botany Bay. - The Wedgwood anti-slavery medallion was an abolitionist symbol produced and distributed by British potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood in 1787 as a seal for the Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. The figure was likely designed and modelled by Henry Webber and William Hackwood with Wedgwood's involvement. The medallion was produced as a jasperware cameo by Wedgwood's factory the Etruria Works and widely distributed in Britain and the United States. These cameos were worn as pendants inlaid in snuff boxes and used to adorn bracelets and hair pins rapidly becoming fashionable symbols of the British abolition movement. The medallion helped to further the abolitionist cause and is today accepted as 'the most recognizable piece of antislavery paraphernalia the movement ever produced'. - A fine small scale print. unknown

In the original cloth binding. A substantial history of the Wedgwood family the name of which is largely connected to the English fine china porcelain and luxury accessories manufacturer founded in 1759 by English potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece folding map thirty-seven plates and numerous vignettes. Collated complete. This account written by his great-great grandson Josiah C. Wedgwood traces the ancestral history of this name back to its earliest record in 1299 with other members discussed including Richard Wedgwood I of Mow Gilbert Wedgwood and Aaron Wedgwood as well as a chapter on unidentified members. Josiah C. Wedgwood was a British Liberal and Labour politician and prominent single-tax activist. In the original cloth binding. Externally with damp stains to the boards. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles to the upper board and spine. A very good or better copy the binding square and firm with some rubbing to the corners and the edges of the slightly toned spine. The contents with toning to the endpapers are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. Inscribed by A. F. Wedgwood in black ink on the half title "To my dear uncle from / the author / 27.5.'10". The recipient is likely Laurence Wedgwood 1844 1913 a director of the Wedgwood pottery firm. The author a keen mountaineer and Captain in the British Army was killed in active service during the First World War March 1917. An adventure novel the main protagonist of which is "Maurice Noonan" a Cambridge undergraduate who is the heir of his uncle "Major Tom Waring" a retired British Army officer and minor landowner from Staffordshire. The action ranges from the Staffordshire Moorlands to the deep interior of "Bolumbia" a fictional South American country where Maurice must overcome Bolumbia's dictator The eponymous Titan "Almirante don Eustauio Etrada de la Camara". Contemporary reviews were favourable 'The Observer' describing The Shadow of a Titan as "a masterpiece on a South American dictatorship which George Meredith might have fathered". Two volumes thick octavo two engraved portrait frontispieces double-page pair of chromolithograph plates of borders numerous wood engravings in the text; ALS from Josiah Wedgwood II son of Josiah Wedgwood attached to verso of frontispiece in first volume; in striking three-quarter red morocco gilt. <p><p>A fascinating and comprehensive work on the life of Josiah Wedgwood 1730-1795 who established the grand firm which carries his name and who is of particular Australian interest as the creator of the Sydney Cove Medallion.</p> <p>An investigation into the nature of the clay of the Sydney basin had been one of the first requests given to Governor Phillip and he sent home a series of specimens to Sir Joseph Banks as soon as he was able. Banks was a close associate of Josiah Wedgwood and some of the clay was immediately dispatched in order to create the Medallion. The medallion was designed by Henry Webber with the final finishing of the moulds done by William Hackwood Wedgwood's principal modeller. The full title of the medallion is "Hope encouraging Art and Labour under the influence of Peace to pursue the employments necessary to give security and happiness to an infant settlement". An engraving of the design adorned the title-page of Phillip's Voyage 1789 and a fine depiction of the Medallion is also included in this work II p 568.</p> <p>Meteyard's work is also of great interest for the number of engravings of cameo portraits which it includes such as the famous portrait of Sir Joseph Banks as a young man as well as those of John Fothergill the artist John Flaxman and Sir Joshua Reynolds quite apart from an almost endless array of illustrations of some of Wedgwood's finest work including one of the famous Portland Vase.</p> <p>A short but interesting manuscript note signed by Josiah Wedgwood II is tipped-on to the verso of the frontispiece discussing Thomas Minton's purchase of some clay at Liverpool with a note on costs.</p> </p> . The University of Cambridge records a letter written by Templeman to to Lady Emma Nora Barlow née Darwin within their holdings.</p> <p>Edited by Henrietta Emma Litchfield A Century of Family Letters assembles the correspondence of Emma Darwin 1808–1896 and her extended family forming a deeply personal record of domestic life at Down House. Although presented as a memoir of Emma the two-volume set contains a substantial number of Charles Darwin’s letters documenting his habits humor and the intimate exchanges that shaped his intellectual and moral outlook. </p> <p>Issued privately for family and friends the edition was explicitly dedicated to Emma Darwin’s grandchildren. Nora Barlow one of the grandchildren to whom the book was dedicated later became the editor of The Autobiography of Charles Darwin 1958 and other Darwin family papers.</p> <p>This copy includes the rare six-page 1915 Postscript to “Emma Darwin: A Century of Family Letters†containing Bernard Darwin’s biographical sketch of Erasmus Darwin 1881–1915.</p> unknown
5107London Early 19th century. 260x240mm when closed and 260x490 when open. Black morocco case lavishly and beautifully tooled in gilt and blind with a brass lock at its centre. It unfolds to to reveal tan morocco compartments for writing and other instruments for use with the writer. The interior is also tooled in gilt and blind and the compartments for tools are covered by two black morocco flaps tooled in gilt and secured by a brass lock. On the inside panel is printed an encomium to Mr Wedgwood and his Manifold Writer from the Royal Institution. The panel that holds the tools opens to reveal a marbled paper blotting pad and instructions in English French and Spanish explaining how to use the Writer. Some rubbing and a little wear to the exterior but overall in nice condition. Tucked into the pocket of the case is the metal tablet which forms part of the Writer. On the instruction sheet is inscribed "From Lord Ponsonby on his leaving Buenos Ayres to whose Mission I was Secretary of Logistics. 1828 H. Parish". Ponsonby was a politician and diplomat whose postings to Argentina and Brazil involved him in fostering the independence of Uruguay as a buffer between the two countries. Ralph Wedgwood is the acknowledge inventor of the carbon copy and this "Stylographic Manifold Writer" is a nice example of his early slightly complicated it must be said method of preparing copies of documents.
