PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Dark blue solid presentation case embossed 'Wedgwood' in gilt with dark blue velvet base internally and cream padded lid which is slightly spotted towards hinge but overall in very good condition. Within sits a pale blue and white Jasperware by Wedgwood oval medallion cameo or plaque of Sir Winston Churchill produced to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of this birth: born 30th November 1874. Measures 11.5 cm high with a raised border of laurel leaves. To the reverse is inscribed 'To commemorate the centenary of the birth of SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL 30th November 1874. Number 732 in a limited edition of 1000'. Below is a Wedgwood factory stamp. Included is a small plastic wallet in very good condition containing an authentication certificate signed by the Chairman of Josiah Wedgwood and Sons Ltd alongside a small paper advertisement for an additional 5 special items produced by the company to commemorate the centenary. The presentation case and wallet come inside their original brown cardboard box labelled and numbered 732. A substantial history of the Wedgwood family the name of which is largely connected to the English fine china porcelain and luxury accessories manufacturer founded in 1759 by English potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece folding map thirty-seven plates and numerous vignettes. Collated complete. This account written by his great-great grandson Josiah C. Wedgwood traces the ancestral history of this name back to its earliest record in 1299 with other members discussed including Richard Wedgwood I of Mow Gilbert Wedgwood and Aaron Wedgwood as well as a chapter on unidentified members. Josiah C. Wedgwood was a British Liberal and Labour politician and prominent single-tax activist. In the original cloth binding. Externally with damp stains to the boards. Rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Good A robust set of the third edition of Edward Stanley's History of Birds in a gift binding "Books suitable for presents handsomely half bound morocco with gilt edges" declaims the publisher's advert inscribed to Louisa Frances Wedgwood 1834-1903 the great granddaughter of Josiah Wedgwood through both her mother and father from her Aunt Eliza likely her maternal aunt Elizabeth Sarah Wedgwood 1795-1857. Louisa Wedgwood would have been thirteen when she received these volumes from her aunt and while the illustrations don't strive for the refined execution of the bindings the plates are engagingly dramatic including 'Contest between a Boy and an Eagle' and 'Perilous Leap of a Bird-Catcher'.
