Scanavino 1922 - 1986 who after a figurative start to his work rapidly progressed with a personal aesthetic partaking of elements of cubism. He took part in several exhibitions including the Venice Biennale 1950 1954 1958 and 1966. He also was the subject of several solo exhibitions starting in Genoa in 1948 through to his final exhibition in Rome's Quadriennale in 1986. One of 240 copies duodecimo size 126 pp. "Woodwork" contains twenty-one wood engravings of tools by the inimitable Eric Gill 1882-1940; a highly regarded printmaker sculptor and typographer as well as a complicated man Gill provided illustrations for numerous fine press publications by the Golden Cockerel Press and the Saint Dominic's Press as well as with Pepler under the imprint of the St. Dominic's Press.<br/><br/>An informative look at the art of carpentry by craftsman-woodworker Arthur Romney Green 1872-1945 who like Gill and Pepler was influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. One of 15 deluxe copies quarto size 47 pp. with signature and chop of Masatsugu Ohtake with an extra suite of plates. Two friends a world apart with a mutual interest in and appreciation for the poetry of Edward Thomas have left us the great gift of this utterly charming work.<br/><br/>Philip Edward Thomas 1878-1917 was already an accomplished novelist and essayist when he turned to poetry. In 1915 at the age of 37 he enlisted in the British Army to fight in "The Great War" and was tragically killed in battle two years later during the Battle of Arras. <br/><br/>His youngest daughter Myfanwy receiving a letter in 1984 from a Mr. Masatsugu Ohtake who was an admirer of Thomas's work responded and the two began a correspondence that would last for almost 20 years as her last letter is dated November 28 2003. <br/><br/>Published privately by the Whittington Press who is renowned for their superb printing and binding; this one of fifteen deluxe copies bound in full Nigerian goatskin by The Fine Book Bindery with endpapers marbled by Christopher Rowlatt printed on Kozo hand-made paper for Masatsugu Ohtake by Patrick Randle with engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn with errata slip loosely laid in at p. 26 with a signature and chop at the colophon which one presumes is that of Masatsugu Ohtake. <br/><br/>The twenty wood-engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn 1898-1982 perfectly complement Myfanwy's description of the lovely English countryside around her which she frequently described to Ohtake; presented in the book in yellow and green and as monochrome in the extra suite of 20 loose plates.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full gold Nigerian goatskin with gilt lettering on the spine fore- and bottom edges uncut endpapers hand-marbled the twenty in-text wood-engravings throughout errata slip of delicate yellow hand-made paper loosely laid in at p. 26; hand-set Caslon printed on Kozo hand-made paper at Whittington Press for Masatsugu Ohtake small quarto size 10 1/8" by 6 1/4" pagination: i-x 1-34 colophon 35 blank 36 acknowledgement of editor 37; this one of the 15 deluxe copies total edition of 50 with an additional 50 copies also bound in full goatskin for the Whittington Press the chop and signature in Japanese on the colophon page. VG but with soiling to covers where glassine was lacking minor age toning to extremities of some pages not bad overall a tight copy that could have been stored better. The front cover is slightly cattywampus from the two extra sets of engravings being inserted in the front of the book as might be expected. Printed wraps with glassine remnants on inside flaps. 24 pp. 15 engravings etchings withing the text and two extra sets of these illustrations each set representing a different state are included only 20 such sets were issued of the overall edition of 430 copies. Text is in French. The book itself has been printed on Imperial Japon and the extra engraving printed on Imperial Japon and on Holland Van Gelder it appears from the colophon and limitation at the rear of the book. Quite rare as a result of this limited configuration. Each set of plates is wrapped in glassine and the extremities of these plates show age-toning or light soiling. The letter explains the "peculiar circumstances" of the gift - Aunt Let Lauretta is on her deathbed and is gifting this lovely book and a bar of soap to her friend Jennie whose gifts of flower bouquets have cheered her in her demise - "God's flowers Dear dear Jennie; oh that the graces of the spirit may bloom in her heart." The final 2 end pages bear small pin holes from where the letter was pinned in at one time. VERY RARE print series illustrating the history of the ascension to the throne of WILLIAM III 1650-1702 and MARY II 1662-1694. The series begins with the Seven Bishops being brought to the Tower of London with a view up the Thames followed by the birth of the Prince of Wales on 10 June 1688 through the entrance of William and Mary into The Hague on 5 February 1691. The series contains several scenes devoted to the festivities surrounding their coronation in London on 11 April 1689. This set of the engravings correspond to Landwehr and appear to have been issued in its original binding without the text; the title-page may have been removed or was not included.
