RARE! COPY No.52 of 200 copies SIGNED BY ARTIST - ARTHUR KOLNIK, printed on Lana paper (altogether were printed 1126 numbered copies, only 226 of them signed by artist). This album is the HEBREW version of a hasidic story by the great Yiddish writer Isaac Leib Peretz illustrated by the renowned Jewish painter and printmaker Arthur Kolnik (1890-1972) who was born in Stanislaviv (today Ivano-Frankovsk), Ukraine and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in the studio of Professor Joseph Mehoffer. After an exhibition in the United States of America in 1921 settled in Chernivtsi and moved to Paris in 1931 where he worked as illustrator. Tel Aviv Art Museum organized a major exhibition of his works in 1968. 320x240mm. 25 pages. 20 woodcuts. Unbound double sheets with softcover. Each woodcut protected by a layer of transparent foil. Storedin original half cloth portfolio with Klimt's gilt-printed signature on the upper cover. Number 326 of only 500 numbered and 10 deluxe copies. The twenty-five monochrome and coloured drawings show women in mainly erotic scenes. All were from the collection of the Austrian industrialist August Lederer and his wife Serena (a relative of the U.S. journalist Joseph Pulitzer), who together spent a fortune on compiling the most important Klimt collection of their age. Forcibly expropriated by the National Socialists in 1938, a significant part of the trove was stored at Immendorf Castle in Lower Austria, where it appears to have perished in a fire in May 1945. - From the collection of the Swedish painter and photographer Johan Theodor Jönsson with two stamps of his archive foundation. Several mounts a little waterstained or dust-soiled, but generally in excellent condition. The map collection was an important constituent of the Royal library (Samuel Johnson recommended buying maps locally in his famous letter to Barnard); The King's Topographical Collection of around 50,000 maps, charts, prints and drawings formerly owned by George III and donated to the Library by George IV, included antiquarian drawings by William Stukeley, large collections of views by Samuel Hieronymus Grimm, the Bucklers and Edward Blore, and the drawings from Captain Cook's voyages or Robert Hay's of Egypt. A privately printed folio edition was printed in the same year.
