Bond after illustrations by William Satchwell and Sir Charles Bell and five handcoloured copperplates drawn and etched by Thomas Rowlandson</p><p>Thomas Rowlandson 1757-1827 was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian and Regency eras noted for his ribald satire and social observation. A prolific artist and printmaker his most famous works include <em>The Miseries of Human Life </em>1808 <em>The Tours of Dr. Syntax</em> 1812-21 <em>Microcosm of London</em> 1810 <em>The English Dance of Death</em> 1815 <em>Military Adventures of Johnny Newcome</em> 1815 <em>History of Johnny Quae Genus</em> 1822 <em>The English Spy</em> 1826 etc.</p><p>Both books scarce: <em>Advice to Sportsmen</em> held by the British Library and London University <em>Pleasures of Human Life</em> held held by the British Library King's College Cambridge Universities of London Manchester Nottingham Durham Southampton etc.</p><p>Bound in quarter green leather spine with raised bands gilt title on red leather label green marble boards rubbed book block solid. First book <em>Advice </em>with slight spotting and toning throughout 14 engraved plates with good dark impressions. Original three-quarter leather and patterned cloth boards. Ex-lib. with institutional labels on spine and endpapers occasional institutional inkstamps in contents not affecting plates. Spine and front board detached binding heavily worn text leaves lightly soiled. Plates fine with the exception of No. 13 which bears a very small stain and a larger one in the margin. Good plus. The scarce collection of exquisite engravings of city views of Antwerp by artist and master etcher and engraver Joseph Linning. While the binding and some contents of this copy show typical library wear the plates themselves have remained unscathed in almost all instances. Imprimerie J.-E. Buschmann hardcover
