A handsome volume and still one of the most approachable gateways into the field with a graceful selection of ukiyo-e images centred on the world of the geisha; musicians dancers and performers captured in moments of poise ritual and quiet artistry. Holme's curation highlights the refinement of gesture costume and setting offering Western readers an early respectful window onto the professional culture of women trained in music dance and social accomplishment. It's the most atmospheric of the four volumes rich in mood and stage-like elegance. 8 large colour plates images measuring 15 x 22 cms approx each with tissue guards and 6 pages of explanatory text. Some foxing to the paper throughout but not to the printed images though their surrounds are foxed. Printed boards covered in Japanese style paper. One of 500 copies folio size pp. The Golden Cockerel Press came together in autumn of 1920 at a time when post-World War I society was ushering in a renaissance of creative minds including another renaissance of the printing press as the artist's tool similar to that of William Morris and the arts and crafts printers of the previous century. The press worked with many notable artists including Eric Gill Blair Hughes-Stanton Robert Gibbings and the artist for this work Clifford Webb. <br /> <br /> Clifford Cyril Webb 1895-1972 studied art and is best known today for his wood engravings. He was a founder-member of the Society of Wood Engravers and "was a prominent figure in the group of engravers whobrought about the revival of wood engraving in the 1920s and benefited from the encouragement of Robert Gibbings and the Golden Cockerel Press" n.b. quote from Webb's entry in Horne "The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators" p. 437. <br /> <br /> Per the bibliographical entry for this work "it is surprising that no complete translation of this unique eye-witness account of the First Crusade had ever been published in England before. Illustrated with 16 color etchings by Bernard Solomon the translator and etcher. He realized there were remarkable parallels between the Biblical story of Esther and that of Anita Hill Clarence Thomas and the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. This interpretation unfolds sequentially as each leaf is unrolled from the 33 in. high scroll holder. The body of the scroll holder is one of the original copper plates used for the etchings which is why it is limited to an edition of only 16. The top and bottom of the handcrafted minaret-style case is finely shaped and polished mahogany by Anthony V. Mann. Designed with a hidden crank to rewind the scroll into the case. First edition printed at the Curwen Press and limited to 450 numbered copies on mould-made paper plus a further thirty deluxe copies this one of the 450 examples but un-numbered. Large 4to. 406pp. Bound in full brown buckram with two red leather spine labels lettered and bordered in gold this binding unusual as the 'correct' binding should be white vellum; the fact that this example is un-numbered may suggest that it was intended as a trial or proof copy or perhaps a file copy. Fore- and bottom edges untrimmed. A touch of very light spotting to the edges and endpapers and to very occasional leaf margins. Backstrip ends very gently rubbed. A very good copy of an uncommon and quite delightful production: a tour-de-force collaboration featuring some of the finest wood engravers of the post-Great War period each one tackling one of the fourteen books classified as apocryphal by the King James Bible. Full brown morocco binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with five raised bands gilt spine titling and large gilt designs by the artist on the upper and lower covers. Gilt ruled turn-ins. top edge gilt and others uncut. 3 maps by Mina Greenhill and 10 wood engravings by Clifford Webb 8 full page. Some discolouration and light marking to the outer fore edge of the front board and some light fading to the outer fore edge of the rear cover with a neat previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. The book is protected in loose Mylar archival cover. Loosely inserted is the 4 page publisher's prospectus. A very handsome production - 'Clifford Webb's wood engravings seemed to me the finest yet produced by this master of black and white.' COCKALORUM 181. More images available on request.
