Based on the crash of the airship Italia flown by Umberto Nobile in May 1928 near the North Pole and the subsequent rescue which cost Roald Amundson his life Capra intended to emulate the success of Wings. This fascinating film was shot in a semi-documentary style providing splendid footage of the USS Los Angeles mid-air docking/recovery of a fighter aircraft and the crash of an airship during a storm just a few years before the Hindenburg disaster. The movie starred Jack Holt Ralph Graves and Fay Wray two years before her huge success in King Kong.
