1957142883Paris: Cinedis 1957. Collection of 14 vintage photographs and color transparencies from the 1957 French-Italian film. Nearly all photographs are contact sheets with 34 color transparencies 24 are medium-format and 5 are mounted. Starring actors Fernandel and Gray comprise most of the collection and the contact sheets consist of candid images of Fernandel director Boyer noted director Christian-Jacques and Fernandel in various accouterments surrounded by female members of the cast. Only a few contact sheets have less than 12 numbered frames amounted to 146 images. Striking images of both Gray and Patrick are scattered throughout the transparencies. <br/><br/>Fernandel stars as a talentless actor who fails to find work and turns to imitating people he sees on the street a stunt that lands him in court where he finally has a chance to showcase his acting ability. Fernandel was France's leading funny man for decades and Gray would go on to her best-known role in Federico Fellini's masterpiece "La Dolce Vita" 1960. Liliane Patrick's debut film later credits include "Maxime" 1958 "Julie the Redhead" 1959 and "A fleur de peau" 1962. <br/><br/>Transparencies housed in original glassine and paper envelopes four with annotations in holograph ink. Two slips of paper one on Cinedis parchment noting various photo sizes and quantities in holograph ink and in French are included. Brief notation in holograph pencil on the verso of the 5 x 7 photograph. All housed in original French Kodak photo box French title label affixed to the lid with annotations in holograph ink. <br/><br/>Sizes range from 2.25 x 4.75 to 7 x 9.25 inches. Very Good plus overall photos with light curling some with faint creases several contact sheets with bruises to one edge and light staining and wrinkling to mounted transparencies. Starring actors Fernandel and Françoise Fabian are present in most of the images including four high contrast portraits of Fabian and a tense scene featuring Fernandel Fabian and Delair. In nearly all photos Fernandel is seen posing models dancing and generally being forthcoming while a in smaller photo two men are tailoring a woman's costume one of them smoking a cigarette. Eleven photos with numerical annotations on the versos in pencil one with "Le couturier de ces dames" in ditto mimeograph duplication. <br/><br/>Fernand Vignard Fernandel is a tailor who needs to create a lasting fashion line to save his business. He does but he also cavorts a little with the models Fabian and his wife Delair discovers his infidelity. The film spoofed the new haute couture that was thriving at the time with notable designers Yves Saint Laurent Pierre Cardin who worked on this film and Japanese native Hanae Mori yet to represent the "new look."<br/><br/>Fernandel was France's leading funny man for decades and Fabian has over 80 film credits including Louis Malle's "The Thief of Paris" 1967 and Luis Buñuel's "Belle de jour" 1967. <br/><br/>Shot on location in Val-de-Marne France. <br/><br/>5 x 7 inches small white borders one photo 3.25 x 4.25 inches. Full provenance available. <br/><br/>Released in France as "L'auberge rouge" and based on the famous 1831 French serial murder case the film centers around a monk Fernandel and a group of travelers who take refuge at inn in the mountains. The inn's host confesses to the monk that he serves poisoned soup to his guests in order to rob their possessions and later dig their graves. The monk tries to save the guest's lives without violating the holy secrecy of the confession. <br/><br/>An uncommon poster designed by Hans Hillmann widely acknowledged as one Germany's top graphic designers whose work consists of over 130 film posters and book designs. Hillmann was awarded in 1992 by the Art Director's Club in New York for illustration. <br/><br/>Shipping billed at cost. Fernandel first conforms to the courtesies of New Year wishes: ""Obligé de commencer ma lettre comme la tienne par correction je te présente mes meilleurs voeux pour toi et tous ceux que tu aimes."" ""Obliged to begin my letter like yours out of courtesy I present my best wishes for you and all those you love."" before signifying that he will not delay in sending him the exhaustive list of his filmography Carlo Rim wishing to write a biography of his friend Fernandel: "". afin que tu puisses avoir des choses vraies à raconter."" "". so that you can have true things to tell."" Finally Fernandel returns to an article published in Cinémonde and written by Alice Carlo Rim's wife for whom he harbors vindictive memories: "". dis-lui de ma part qu'on ne peut pas écrire de plus grandes conneries car d'après son papier j'ai été imposé dans le film d'Aron. et qui m'avait démandé si cela ne me faisait rien d'avoir Gaby Morlay comme partenaire."" "". tell her from me that one cannot write greater nonsense because according to her article I was imposed in Aron's film. and who had asked me if it didn't bother me to have Gaby Morlay as a partner.""
