Limited Edition of only 450 copies Stiff paper soft cover with Black & red Letters and illustrations with a soft cover stapled 31 page booklet laid in texts in English.The publication contains 100 woodcuts by Posada 1852-1913 from different points of his career. Each small image is printed against a colored background on a sheet of buff paper that is numbered in the top right corner and accompanied by a verse in Spanish in the lower part relating to what is depicted. The plates are loose and housed in a folder of the same size.The publication is repeated on the loose page plate as what is on the cover that is followed by a brief description in Spanish of it's contents written by the publisher followed by the same in English. This is followed by a photo image of Posada then another of his orignal publisher Antonio Vanegas Arroyo With an introduction by Jean Charlot in Spanish and English.The separate booklet containing a Fopreword by Ms. Charlot an introduction by W.S. Stallings Jr. with a bibliography relating to Posada and translations of the verses that accompany the 100 plates. This very rare collections is complete and to make it interesting the inside cover is sided by a number of Broadway Actors like Judd Hirsch Bill Macy Estelle Parsons Porter Van Zandt Julie Harris Virgina Payne Rae Allen Dorothy Stevens Michelle Myers and many others. Quarto bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with gilt titles to the spine top edge gilt gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers frontispiece of Prosper Mérimée illustrated with color lithographs. Boldly signed by illustrator Jean Charlot on the colophon page at the rear. One of an unstated number of copies this is number 331. In near fine condition with sunning to the spine. Translated from the French by Lady Mary Lloyd. Introduction by Konrad Bercovici. Illustrated by Jean Charlot. Prosper Mérimée 1803–1870 was a prominent French writer historian and archaeologist whose literary work reflects the Romantic fascination with exotic locales psychological complexity and the darker aspects of human passion. Though associated with the Romantic movement Mérimée’s prose is marked by clarity conciseness and an interest in realism that sets him apart from his more lyrical contemporaries. His most enduring works such as Carmen and Colomba often center on violent conflicts rooted in cultural difference honor and personal obsession. As Inspector-General of Historical Monuments Mérimée was also instrumental in preserving French architectural heritage demonstrating a scholarly rigor that shaped both his fiction and his public life. One of 2500 copies printed. Inscribed and with an ink sketch by Charlot on a front blank: "For Sister Roberta A restless model and an excellent helper. Jean Charlot Notre Dame Summer 1955." The sketch measures approximately 2" x 3" and features a peg-legged pirate holding a large saw and seated beneath the Jolly Roger.
